This past weekend us Her Campus writers swirlled cotton candy and poured pink lemonade at our booth at Springfest. Check out our sweet pictures below!

SEA's Earth Weekend

Thursday, April 26, 2012

This past weekend was filled with events led by Students for Environmental Action (SEA) in honor of Earth Week. With a tree-planting event Friday, a campus cleanup Saturday, our semi-annual Local Food Banquet on Sunday, our Earth Day Fair on Sunday, and finally our first ever Brandeis Food Day, it was nearly impossible to have missed out on at least one of the fun events. Brandeis’s campus was covered with chalk, banners, free food, and farmers (!) all hoping to help encourage the movement of environmentalism and awareness of how much impact an individual can actually. Each event had a different flair, but all of them were cohesive in their overall message: One small change can make a difference, so join in with SEA to continue to promote a cleaner, healthier, and communal earth!

Starting out on Friday, a group of students planted a tree in honor of the start to Earth Week.

A similar event happened on Saturday, in which a group of us set out with trash bags and gloves and walked around campus in search of trash. Within seconds, we were picking up the thrown red solo cups, cigarette butts, and candy wrappers laying in and around bushes/trees/grass that is finally green and plush.

Simultaneously, we all were cooking away all Saturday to create a delicious, vegan meal for our Banquet on Sunday. We purchased items from Waltham Fields Community Farm and  acquired as much local and organic food as is possible at this time of the year from multiple markets near Waltham. Instead of the formal version of Banquet we usually hold, we took it to a new level and made a beautiful hippie picnic with blankets throughout the SCC. We all sat around and enjoyed a wonderful meal together. We had two farmers from Newton Community Farm come speak to us, as well as our very own Jesse Stettin ’13 speak about his experience WWOOFing (stands for World wide opportunities on organic farms) in the South of France this previous winter break. To finish the meal we had red velvet vegan cupcakes that actually taste better than any other cupcakes I’ve had (and I’ve tried them all, promise).

Following the delicious meal, we then had a fair that had tables from many different environmental groups on campus. We even had some off-campus organizations for example GreenBean, the organization that implemented our new bottle-recycling machine in Usdan that gives you money back for your bottles) with giveaways as well as information as to what you can do here on campus.

Later that evening, in conjunction with the Student Union Senate, we had a film screening of Gasland with free Baan Thai giveaway to munch on while gaining some education.

To wrap up the wonderful weekend, we had our first Brandeis Food Day filled with local apple giveaways, herb-planting, a Farmers Market, and a screening of different fooducation (new word!) clips with local cheeses provided by the Cheese Club.

Sizzling Fun at the Brandeis Spring BBQ

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

This Monday, April 16, the Student Union welcomed the Brandeis community back to campus with free food, great music and good old fun on the Great Lawn. The BBQ was conveniently offered the day after the break as a welcome back for those who went home (and as an opportunity to bring together those who stayed). It also served as a distraction from the horrors that lie ahead in the last exhausting weeks of school, especially all the studying that will take place during finals week, which is quickly approaching (sigh). I guess we better have fun while we still can!

Some of the delicious items on the menu at the BBQ were: burgers, hotdogs, black bean vegetarian burgers, drinks and chips, which were accompanied by great music courtesy of DJ Venti. Since it was a very sunny day, the BBQ was the perfect event. Friends were caught up with one another, danced, tanned and had fun all over the Great Lawn. Everyone ate and used the event as an opportunity to take a study break and enjoy the sun. You know what they say, there’s nothing better than a good burger to bring people together and say “Hey, welcome back to Deis.”

Bite into Some Funky Einstein's Bagels

Friday, April 6, 2012

We all know that Einstein's Bagels is THE place on campus to pick up a bagel, fruit salad and coffee to jumpstart your school day. What you may not know is that they offer some pretty unique bagel options (some that are unknown to the student body). For example, did you know that they can actually scoop out your bagel if you're the type of person who enjoys a bagel which more cream cheese and less fluff? Did you know that they also serve a lox and cream cheese bagel (as in they put actual lox ON your cream cheese) in addition to serving salmon cream cheese? Hummus and PB&J bagels are other toppings that some students add to their bagels.  Even though I'm a senior, I have never heard of some of these crazy offerings, although I wish I had sooner. If you want to try something new at Einstein's, take a bite out of some of these bagels:

1. Scooped out Bagel w/ Cream Cheese

2. Jalapeno Cream Cheese Bagel

3. Double-Toasted Bagel

4. Bagel and Butter

5. Peanut Butter and Jelly Bagel

5 Madewell Items to Spring for this Season

Thursday, March 29, 2012

Oftentimes when friends approach me for fashion advice, they either ask me one of two questions: How do I look or where can I find _____? Since I am constantly reading fashion magazines and blogs and perusing stores online, they always think I know exactly the right place to go in order to find the specific article of clothing they are looking for. Last week when one of my friends asked what store she could find some key spring pieces to spruce up her wardrobe, it took me less then a second to say “Madewell.” It is the ultimate place to find fun classic pieces that will transform any wardrobe seamlessly from winter to spring. I visited Madewell at the Natick Mall this past Friday and was overwhelmed with the fabulous pieces they have for the season. Below are five key items that are in line with this season’s trends that you should definitely spring for this spring.

1.     Floral Denim

2.     Pastels

3.     Geometric/ Art Deco Patterns

4.     Polka Dots

5.     Tangerine

Trendesian: First Week of Spring

Thursday, March 22, 2012

Fashionistas ushered in the start of spring this week by leaving their coats and scarves at home and instead opting for chic skirts, dresses and shorts. From the great lawn to the SCC, students everywhere were looking trendy and fabulous in their ensembles. Below are four of my must-see looks of the week.

1. Amy Melser '12:
Favorite part of the look- Amy's Maxi Skirt. It is a definite spring and summer wardrobe staple.

2. Krista Giuntoli '14:
Favorite part of the look- Krista's colorful scarf. It adds the perfect pop of color to her blue ensemble.

3. Andrea Katz '14:
Favorite part of the look- Andrea's braided belt. It does a great job of breaking up the dress and adding definition to her waist. Also, notice how the color of her nails match her dress... So fun!

4. Carolyn Schweitzer '12:
Favorite part of the look- Caroyn's shoes! There is only one word I can use to describe these Chuck Taylors: fierce.

Stay stylish ladies! The weather might be cooling down next week, but that doesn't mean that your outfits should!
