It’s the first few weeks of school and your apartment is still completely empty, and you and your friends have no idea how to go about buying things to fill it. Sound familiar? Things can get tricky when it comes to mixing money with relationships, and each person’s budget can be a touchy subject.
You’re going to fight with your roommate. Plain and simple. Not only are you living with a complete stranger – you are confined to a shoebox sized space and will be spending tons of time in those close quarters.
Whether it was the day you walked into your tiny dorm room freshman year, eagerly anticipating the arrival of your roommate who you’d stalked on Facebook all summer, or the first day of senior year when you moved into your first apartment with your three best friends, living away from home is one of the most anticipated perks of college.
Freshman year with your random roommate was awkward. Not only did you have to sleep just feet away from a complete stranger, but you also had to get used to her strange, annoying and downright gross habits (one of my friends had a roommate who used to pee in cups when she didn’t feel like walking down the hall to the bathroom—seriously).
In college, as in life, some things are unavoidable: tuition, essays, bad-for-you food…and roommates. Unless you live at home while going to school, from the time you enter the higher education world until you leave it (and probably beyond that), you will be coping with people in your personal space – sharing a bathroom, the kitchen and the TV.
