Why Today is a #ProtectTransWomen Day of Action

So far in 2017, seven transgender women have been killed, according to CBS News. That’s a horrifying trend, but it fits in with past years—in 2016, at least 21 trans women were killed. Activists have named Wednesday, March 15 a national day of action to fight back against the devaluing of trans women’s lives.

GetEQUAL and several other organizations signed on to the day of action, encouraging people to donate, educate themselves and post on social media with the hashtag #ProtectTransWomen.

Director of GetEQUALAngela Peoples told MTV News that the day is all about saying, “we will love [black trans women] and we will protect them and show up with and for them while they are here, not just when they are taken from us.”

So let’s get to it—Check out GetEQUAL’s website for concrete ways you can help educate yourself and support others.
