Many students from around the world choose to come to the U.S. for college in order to get a high-quality education. But before you start feeling good about yourself, consider this bit of information: according to this year’s Times Higher Education’s annual ranking, the U.S. isn’t doing as hot as it used to be when it comes to college.
That’s right—Out of the top 200 colleges around the globe on the list, America only claims 63 schools on the list, down from 74 just last year. Meanwhile, countries such as Germany and the Netherlands have gained spots. Rankings editor Phil Baty commented on the U.S.’s fall in the rankings, noting that since the 2008 recession, 47 states have issued some sort of cuts to higher education funding. In other words, America shouldn’t get too comfortable with their title as college hotspot of the world.
