We all get disappointed when the barista at our local Starbucks misspells our name over and over again, no matter how many skinny vanilla lattes we order. This type of dismay was taken to a whole new level for a customer at a Florida Starbucks over the weekend.
After ordering a Grande white chocolate mocha, the Starbucks customer claims instead of labeling the drink with his name, the barista labeled the cup “Diabetes here I come.” It’s true that most Starbucks drinks are loaded with suger, but who is anyone else to judge another person’s drink choices?
The insensitive label would offend anyone, but it really hit home for this customer in particular.
The anonymous customer told Action News Jax that he has two sisters with Type 1 Diabetes. The “first word just automatically brought the picture of both sisters in my head,” the customer said.
In retaliation, the customer scribbled back to the barista on the cup, writing “2 of my sisters are diabetic, so … not funny.”
The store manager, Kent Miller, was quoted by Action News Jax saying that they “definitely don’t condone” what happened to the customer, and that he would find out more about the incident. Shortly after, the company released a public apology,
“We strive to provide an inclusive and positive experience for our customers, and we’re disappointed to learn of this incident,” Starbucks corporate headquarters said in an email to Action News Jax. “We are working directly with the customer to apologize for his experience, and with our partners (employees) to ensure this does not happen again.”
It’s great and all that they said they were sorry, but this was a seriously messed up thing to do. According to Refinery29, the customer does not want an apology, he simply wants to be sure that this does not happen to anyone else. Hopefully this customer gets his wish and we can all go back to being annoyed that our local barista spelled “Cindy” as “Sindee.”
