Soon, You’ll Be Able to Get Hangover-Free Wine

How many times have you settled in to watch the latest episode of Scandal with your besties and had to forgo the wine because you just can’t afford to show up to another 8 a.m. lecture hungover? Since the struggle is not yours alone, science has blessed us with a solution: hangover-free wine. Let’s take a moment to bow down to the people who have made it their life’s work to bring us this miracle.

Researchers at the University of Illinois have engineered a groundbreaking new yeast with genes that can be altered—basically, what that means for us is that wine can now be changed not only to help us lose those pounding morning-after headaches, but also to increase wine’s health benefits or even enhance its taste.

“Wine, for instance, contains the healthful component resveratrol. With engineered yeast, we could increase the amount of resveratrol in a variety of wine by 10 times or more,” lead researcher Yong-Su Jin noted in a press release. Sounds like a win-win to us!

This magical wine might not be available for purchase anytime soon, but at least we know it’s in our futures. Olivia Popes of the world, rejoice!
