A vocally pro-gun Florida mom was shot in the back by her four-year-old son Tuesday while she was driving. Luckily, she’s doing okay.
Jamie Gilt, 31, is an advocate for the Second Amendment both in real life and on social media. She told a police officer in Putnam County, Fla., that her son had accidentally shot her gun through her back seat and into her while she was driving. Marie Claire reported that a .45 caliber handgun was found in the backseat of the four-door pickup truck next to Gilt’s son, who wasn’t strapped into his booster seat.
Not even a day earlier, Jamie had posted on Facebook that her son was skilled at shooting and wrote, “Even my 4-year-old gets jacked up to target shoot with the .22.” According to the Daily Mail, Gilt reportedly believes that she has a right to “shoot anyone who threatens her family—and plans to teach her offspring the same mentality.” She had posted pictures online with phrases like, “My right to protect my child with my gun trumps your fear of my gun.”
Although both the mom and her son are okay, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying that Gilt could get charged with leaving a loaded gun unsafely stored.
“Florida Statute makes it a misdemeanor for a person to store or leave, on a premise under his or her control, a loaded firearm in such a manner that it is likely a child can gain access to the firearm,” the statement reads.
We’re glad Jamie and her son are safe, but we seriously doubt she’ll love guns as much as she used to.
