In the latest of the series of President Trump’s controversial actions, the rumored possibility of the President firing special counsel Robert Mueller has incited preemptive organizations of protests by several progressive groups.
Over 140,000 people have registered online to participate in these protests, which have now grown to include a dozen organized groups and take place in more than 600 cities, the Washington Post reports. Even though such a decision remains unknown, and may not even actually occur, it speaks volumes to see the American public rallying together around common interests and priorities such as this one: ensuring that the Chief Executive of the country is not above the law.
President Trump, along with other White House officials, have denied this speculation over whether or not he will decide to fire special counsel Mueller, who has been investigating the Russian interference with the 2016 presidential election, has also recommended charges against the President’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and ex-campaign chairman, Paul Manafort.

Eric Holder, the former Attorney General for the United States, declared that such an act would be “an absolute red line” which the President should not cross without putting the county into a constitutional crisis.
Unsurprisingly, President Trump continues to rebuke those via Twitter and name-calling who stand opposed to him in his defense (of innocence and ignorance) with Russia’s meddling in the 2016 campaign. However, deciding to fire Robert Mueller, should he do so, would escalate this political crisis to a nearly-unprecedented level. Such a situation is disconcertingly reminiscent of the Watergate scandal during the Nixon administration, in which President Nixon repeatedly fired officials who were appointed to further investigate his involvement in order to protect himself and his position.
Only time will tell how President Trump chooses to respond to the allegations at hand and the fate of special counsel Mueller, but one thing remains certain: the American people will not stand for violations of justice and democracy.
