Donald Trump Says Women Should be Punished for Having Abortions, Then Takes It Back

Donald Trump has done it again. The Republican candidate made sweeping statements about women and abortions Wednesday night, even saying that women who have abortions should be punished by law.

In a clip from MSNBC Chris Matthews asked Trump if he believes there should be punishment for having an abortion. CBS News reports Trump responded saying: “The answer is there has to be some form of punishment.” When Matthews clarified that he meant punishment for women, Trump confirmed that’s what he meant.

His campaign issued a statement Wednesday night, withdrawing the comments he made to Matthews, and restating his position on the matter:

Both Republicans and Democrats denounced Trumps statements, that advocates for the pro-life movement say are not in line with their beliefs.

“No pro-lifer would ever want to punish a woman who has chosen abortion,” Jeanne Mancini, the president of the March for Life Education and Defense Fund told The New York Times. “We invite a woman who has gone down this route to consider paths to healing, not punishment.”
