Unfortunately, our society still has a huge problem with fat-shaming. That’s where WooPlus comes in—it’s a dating site for plus-size singles to find those who already admire and want to date them, without having to deal with jerks on non-specialized dating sites.
The app’s interface is similar to that of Tinder’s, as users can “pass” or “like” others, and can chat if the liking is mutual. However, what makes WooPlus unique is that it’s specifically for curvy women and the men who admire them. The app launched back November, and now has more than 10,000 users.
“The unfortunate reality is that the current dating environment is very cruel to bigger girls,” Neil Raman, the CEO of WooPlus, told the Mirror. Explaining that his own sister had experienced this, he wanted to do something about it. “I decided to solve this problem and create an app just for big girls.”
To ensure the app remains a safe space for users, WooPlus permanently bans fat shamers or anyone who makes derogatory comments about another member’s appearance.
“We’re just trying to provide a comfortable environment for women who happen to be a little larger,” Michelle Li, another co-founder of the app, told the Daily Dot. “It’s for women of all different bodies and sizes. But we wanted to show that you don’t need to have a low BMI to be attractive.” Preach!
Online dating might seem overwhelming at first, but apps like this one make it so much easier to get started. Everyone deserves love and great relationships, and they shouldn’t have to wade through tons of insulting, ignorant comments about their appearance to get there.
