With all of the controversy over Chick-fil-A’s stance on gay rights, a Chick-fil-A in California decided to take a stance on the opposite side of the spectrum. Corey Braun, a franchisee at the Chick-fil-A in Cucamonga, California gave away dozens of free meal coupons to a group of same-sex marriage supporters and advocates who were protesting and demonstrating this past Monday at an intersection near the restaurant.
Last July, Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy revealed his anti-gay beliefs, admitting that he is guilty when it comes to Chick-fil-A’s support of the “traditional family.” Braun told the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, “I wanted to show that Chick-fil-A doesn’t discriminate against anybody.” Braun said that Chick-fil-A is happy to serve the community and he found that the same-sex marriage supporters’ rally was a great opportunity to show hospitality.
Last August 1, hundreds of customers flocked to the same restaurant on “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” to fight against Cathy’s anti-gay marriage comments. With that being said, the supporters were completely shocked and pleasantly surprised by Braun’s actions this past Monday. Eden Anderson, a LGBT rights supporter told the Daily Bulletin, “When people are open and apologetic and accepting, it’s touching to us.”
The same-sex marriage supporters’ demonstrations are currently extremely relevant because the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8 are currently being reviewed in the Supreme Court.
