Bloomingdale’s Apologizes for Inappropriate Holiday Ad

A recent ad in Bloomingdale’s holiday catalog is causing a lot of controvery—and for good reason.

The ad features a man looking at a woman with the words, “Spike your best friend’s egg nog when they’re not looking.” It’s pretty hard not to interpret this ad as encouraging you to basically roofie your friends. Which is super not okay.

Whatever Bloomingdale’s meant by this caption, they shouldn’t have printed it and are facing a lot of backlash on Twitter.

“In reflection of recent feedback, the copy we used in our recent catalog was inappropriate and in poor taste. Bloomingdale’s sincerely apologizes for this error in judgment,” a brand representative told Tech Insider.

NBC News pointed out that this is not the first time something like this has happened, referring to Bud Light ads earlier this year that featured the tagline, “The perfect beer for removing the word ‘no’ from your vocabulary for the night.” Again, any ad telling you to drink alcohol and stop listening to the word “no” easily brings sexual assault to mind.

Companies really need to think twice about the language they use in advertisements. Does this ad anger you, collegiettes?
