BC Student Wins Free Burritos for a Year After Eating 90 Habanero Peppers

Some serious father-daughter bonding went on last week in Boston when Boston College student Alison Hiatt and her father, Jeff, swept the floor at the El Pelon Taqueria’a Chile Eating Contest.

According to Boston.com, when the 21-year old student sent her dad the link to the contest, their only goal was to “not be the first ones out.” Little did they know that Alison would win first place in the competition and her father would follow closely behind with a second place victory.

The rules of the competition were pretty simple—each contestant had two minutes to eat each pepper and those who puked, drank or could not move on to the next pepper were out of the running.

Last year, the winner of the competition was able to take the title after eating 16 habaneros. However, Alison and her father’s love and devotion to spicy food blew this number out of the park. They each consumed 90 habanero peppers before Alison’s father gracefully bowed out of the competition, letting his daughter claim victory.

The restaurant hosting the event awarded the first place winner with free burritos for an entire year and all of the proceeds made from the competition benefitted the food rescue non-profit Lovin Spoonfuls. According to Boston magazine, the event ended up raising $5,000 dollars for the organization.

Even though a year’s worth of free burritos sounds like a dream come true to all of you Chipotle addicts and guac lovers out there, Alison was just in it for the fun of it.

“I don’t really eat a lot of burritos,” she told Boston.com. “But when I got out of the competition, I already had like 12 friends text me about getting free burritos so they were really excited.”
