2 People Were Killed & 4 Injured In a Shooting at a New Mexico Library

A shooter opened fire on a public library in Clovis, New Mexico on Monday afternoon, leaving two women dead and four other people injured, the Associated Press reports.

Clovis City Police Chief Doug Ford said at a press conference on Monday night that the gunfire began around 4pm with police arriving on the scene shortly after. Ford said that the shooter surrendered to police “immediately” after making contact and confirmed that he was still in custody. Ford also confirmed that a young man who was escorted out of the library in handcuffs at the scene was the primary suspect. However, Ford adds that investigators haven’t determined a motive for the shooting as of the conference.

Included among the injured, Ford said, were two men and two women — adding that all have been taken to various hospitals in New Mexico and Texas for treatment. He said he couldn’t confirm the extent of their injuries, though.

Clovis Mayor David Lansford said “we’re all hurting right now” and asked for prayers for the victims and community members before commending the Clovis City Police Department for their handling of the situation.

“We are a strong community, we’re a faith-based community and I know that the faith community will rise up and wrap their arms around those that are hurting and those that are in need of care,” Lansford said. “…We’ve been hit hard, but we’re a community that will get back up and we will see a brighter day at some time in the future.”

Family and friends of the victims Wanda Walters and Krissie Carter have made GoFundMe campaigns in each of their honor.
