Name: Uros Simovic
Major: Electrical Engineering
Graduating: December 2012
Hometown: Belgrade, Serbia

Favorite city & why?
Istanbul. It caught me by surprise, I wasn’t expecting such a wonderful combination of East and West, old and modern. I honestly wasn’t expecting much, when you go to Paris and New York you feel like you’ve been there before because of all the movies, but Istanbul, I felt like I was discovering it on my own

What does your ideal Friday night entail?
Absolutely anything with friends, it could be a fancy bar or just relaxing on a couch

Favorite meal:
This is quite difficult, it all depends on the season, availability, and my overall mood, but a home cooked meal is always appreciated. It has the best spice out there and it’s prepared with love (I know it sounds cheesy but hey, you know it’s true)

If you could be any superhero, which one would you be?
Batman, out of all of them he is the only one that has no superpowers and is the most selfless

Hobbies:
The oldest hobby I have is paleontology. At some point in time, I wanted to study science, biology, evolution, and ultimately, paleontology. Unfortunately, my family of engineers didn’t like that idea so I turned that passion into my hobby. If you walk into my room, you will find dozens of university level books, wooden skeletons, and if you are lucky I might even show you some fossils I acquired over the years

Something no one knows about you?
If there is something no one knows about me, I would like to keep it that way

Jawann brightens everyone’s day at Montclair; you should get to know him!

What do you do on campus?
I’m pretty uninvolved in any campus activity.

What’s one girl trend you don’t understand?
Sweat shorts, they don’t make any sense to me. They lack both the warmth and knee coverage sweat pants offer. Cover up your knees if you’re going to be walking around everywhere.

What do you look for in a girl?
My only requirements in girls are no tattoos and she should be shorter than me, but these are extremely flexible depending on how good the tattoos look and how much the girl decides to emasculate me. In terms of character, the girl should not only like animals, but they should like her. It is never a good sign when animals hate you.

If you had to be handcuffed to one person at Colby for the rest of your life, who would it be and why?
Julia Knoeff, because she is a beautiful Dutch princess.

What’s your most embarrassing moment?
Freshmen year, loudness 2-4AM, Sunday.

What’s your favorite pick-up line?
I don’t use lines; I use plays
Step 1: Rent dog
Step 2: Meet girl(s)
Step 3: Be dawg

What do girls like best about you?
My olive skin tone, my beautiful eyes, my charming hair, my handsome muscles, my strong hands, my sensitive touch, my toned calves and my humility.

How did your first kiss go down?
I was in a slide.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
To wherever Julia Knoeff is.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to freshmen girls?
Girls: Stay away from my roommate, Trevordactyl.
Guys: Go to gym and get huge.

What’s the first CD you ever bought?
Mambo No. 5 – Lou Bega.

If you had a daughter, what would you name her and why?
Brittney, after my favorite singer.

What kind of shampoo do you use?
T-gel keeps out the flakes. It also holds .5% tar, which is just the right amount.

Finish this sentence: if you really knew me, you’d know that…
My three biggest fears are sliced pineapple, pickles, and talking to a beautiful girl.

What do you think of UC Irvine?
It’s definitely the opposite of what I thought it was going to be…  I think we have a lot of cool professors and opportunities.

Do you have any siblings?
I have three brothers.

Are you a cat person or a dog person?
I’m totally a dog person.

Where is your favorite place to travel?
I really like Japan.  The culture over there is all about community rather than America where it’s very individualistic.  One time I went to a train station in Japan and this man was trying to ask me if I needed help with my ticket.  He didn’t even speak English and he was trying to help me!

What do you look for in a girl?
Someone who’s willing to teach and be taught, a dynamic where you have a solid foundation and you’re both able to learn new things from each other.  When you come into the relationship, the other person should be able to make you stronger.

What do you want to do after graduation?
I would like to work at Google or Apple, that’d be really cool.  Or be a teacher, I really like teaching.  Or maybe take a break and go overseas to do relief work.

What do you look for in your significant other?
I like girls who are mysterious, but who also have a lot of character. I’m a pretty calm person on my own, but I’d still like a lot of action in my relationship. Basically I’m not that picky.

What turns you off?
I hate it when girls are possessive. I don’t want to be possessed. I’m not an object.

What is the worst experience you’ve ever had with a girl?
I had been really good friends with this girl and everything was going well, until she started to think I was into her. She would tell her friends that I had a crush on her, even though it wasn’t the case. Finally, she asked me if I was into her. Of course, I said I wasn’t and she understood. At first it was awkward, but now we’re very good friends again so everything ended well. J

Who is your celebrity crush?
I would say Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel or simply any Victoria’s secret models.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Ten years from now, I see myself with a stable career and life. I would have my own house. Maybe I will be living with a steady girlfriend, or even my wife. I’d often do barbecues with friends and enjoy time while it passes.

Would you prefer living in the city or in the country?
I’d rather live in the country and work in town. Preferably, I’d be able to fly my helicopter to work (It’s on my Christmas list haha), but otherwise I’d live in the suburbs not too far. Or, I’d have a loft close to my work and a big cottage that I’d go to during weekends.

Name: Brandon Smith
Major: Pharmacy
Relationship status: Single
Hometown: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Campus Involvement: I am a member of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity Inc., 2012-2013 COPPS SGA treasurer, and King of the second year professional pharmacy class.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?
[I see myself] graduated; I’ll probably already have kids. I think I want to go to Texas when I graduate, and I’ll probably have two businesses. One would maybe be a pharmacy, I’m not sure yet, and the other one would be something with clothes; investing with my friends in their clothing line.

How do you feel about relationships in college?
[Relationships] are good for the people who are in them; I personally don’t like relationships. Because I’m in pharmacy school I feel like that is too much stress for me. Some people function better in relationships, and some people function better outside of them.

Who is your favorite music artist?
Right now I like Kendrick Lamar, but I don’t have a favorite in particular.

How do you feel about girls who wear makeup?
I don’t really care about it too much, but I like natural beauty better. I just don’t like girls who have on too much makeup and overdo it.

What is the last book that you’ve read?
Right now I’m reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X; but Rich Dad, Poor Dad was the last one I’ve completed.

What is the sexiest thing a girl could wear?
I like basic [things], so I would like jeans and a t-shirt; it’s just the way you wear it. I like dresses too; club dresses of course, but I like sundresses too. I just like good clothes, no particular choice because I don’t really look at the clothes, I look at the face or whatever else catches my attention about that person.

Who is your celebrity crush?
Lauren London.

What is the first thing you notice about a girl?
Her smile.

What’s the best movie that you’ve seen?
The Dark Night Rises. It was [good] from the beginning to the end.

What are 3 words that describe you?
Funny, cool, and mellow.

What’s your ideal weekend?
Friday: No class, hit the mountain with some friends, eat out for dinner, and then go out with some friends; Saturday: Go to the beach all day to ride Mx, and surf. Maybe a little rock climbing, then come home and go to a reggae concert on a double date with my buddy Conor, and then maybe go out after; Sunday: Up decently early, no homework, go for a sick hike, workout, go skydiving, then unwind. That sounds about right.

What would be your ideal girlfriend?
Has the prettiest eyes, is athletic, and is smarter than I am! But she also needs to be able to hold down a good conversation.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to be an account planner in advertising. An account planner is the person who makes all the unlikely connections likely. They are literally told to have fun, to be enthusiastic, and go out and experience new things. Sounds fine by me.

Most exciting thing I’ve ever done:
I’ve done a lot of crazy shit over the years, but skydiving was on a whole new level for some reason!

Cat or Dog person: I love both, but kitties always love me for some reason.

Favorite sports to watch or play: I like to play golf, ski, rock climb, run, and long board. I only really follow Duck football and the Portland Trailblazers.

What’s your favorite guilty pleasure chick flick?
Ummmmmmm… I never really watched any chick flicks growing up, I think I saw The Notebook one time though!

Name: DS Shin ‘15 (Creator and Director of Jam Sesh)
Major: RTVF/Economics
Hometown: Seoul, South Korea
Birthday: July 13, 1992
Campus Living: Allison
Relationship Status: Single

What made you want to start a music reality show?
I’m an RTVF major, so I’m really into films and TV shows. But I’m a little different from other RTVF people. I didn’t watch all of IMDB’s top 100 movies. What I really like about the media is how it interacts with a lot of people and how it entertains so many people with one thing. So I wanted to try something new to entertain myself and entertain the student body. The first week I came to Northwestern, I watched some of the a cappella and dance shows and I really liked them. I wanted to have more opportunities to watch them, but then I realized I didn’t have much time to go because I had to go to weekly film sets and stuff. So I just wanted to make that into a reality show where we can just film (music acts) and have a weekly show about that. After going to Dance Marathon Battle of the Bands and other musical and theater shows, I realized that there is a lot of variety when it comes to musical talents (at Northwestern), so I wanted to have all different genres of music in the show as well.

Tell me more about Jam Sesh.
It’s kind of like NU’s Got Talent. We have five different acts. We have a pop singer, we have a rapper, an a cappella group, a punk rock group. And then we have a chill band. I’m not too sure about the genre of that group. They’re completely different types of people. They’ll all have a different perspective on music. So we gave them one challenge song, “Living in the Now,” which is on our Facebook page. Like the page! They will adapt the song in all different ways and they’re going to perform it in front of a live audience. People who are in the live performance and people who view the show online are going to vote for the winner. The winner will get the music video.

What other things are you involved on campus?
I’m mostly on film sets. On film sets I’m usually on the production designing team. I like graphic designing a lot so I’m kind of the go-to person for graphic designing when it comes to RTVF freshmen.

What are your future career goals?
To be honest, the media industry is changing so fast right now. Even in just TV shows, the trend is changing so fast. So I will have to see for my future career goals, but as for my intern fantasy, I will like to work at WWE someday.

Any guilty pleasures?
(WWE) goes into guilty pleasures. My guilty pleasure is watching Monday Night Raw live through internet streaming on Mondays.

Pet peeves?
It’s worst in the city, but even in Evanston, the wind is just so strong. I’m growing out my hair a little bit but (the wind) messes it up so much. So I try to fix it up every time, but it gets messed up even more. So I’m really pissed off that whenever I’m walking this happens.

What do you find most attractive in a girl?
I’ve been watching WWE for a really long time and my idol is actually the Seven-time Women’s Champion, Trish Stratus. I like self-determined women with power. I like smart, sexy and powerful. And long hair. Long hair flipping.

What’s your biggest turn off in a girl?
I really don’t like nagging girls who try to depend on guys. My ex-girlfriend was so thin. Whenever I held her hand, I felt like holding a tree branch. So no thin.

What’s your idea of a perfect date?
If I like someone, I like whatever I do with that person.

What are some words you live by?
For now, Jam on!

What is something that people are surprised to know about you?
Haha, that I don’t play basketball!  Being 6’8”, people ask me all of the time whether or not I play basketball, and they’re astounded to hear that I don’t.  Besides that, I would say that most people are surprised that I’m actually originally from England.  I was born in London and lived there until I was nearly 7.  I barely have an accent, though it does still come out sometimes.

What is on your bucket list before graduation?
Go to Hebron.  Amazingly enough, I have yet to go to Hebron, and I have been a student here for 3 and a half years!

Who is your favorite Disney princess?
……… Really? Ugh, if I have to choose one, I guess Belle from Beauty and the Beast.  She’s Hannah’s favorite (my fiancé), and I honestly don’t give a crap about Disney movies, so why not trust the expert.

Do you have funny experiences with a girl using a pick up line on you or vice versa?
Not necessarily involving a pick-up line, but I have quite a few experiences with some ridiculous things being said to me…  Seriously, some of them are so insane that I can’t even disclose what was said.

If you could only eat one kind of food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Bangers and mash.  For those who don’t know what that is, it’s English sausages and mashed potatoes.  It’s a massive essential in the English cuisine, so it’s kind of a no-brainer honestly.

If you could trade places with one superhero, who would it be and why?
The Incredible Hulk.  No one messes around with that guy.  He seriously could rip someone’s head off just by looking at them.

What has been the best part about being engaged?
Honestly, the planning.  The more progress we have made, the more it has become a reality, and the excitement has built consistently because of that.

What are you looking forward to most about getting married?
Beginning my life with Hannah.  I’m just looking forward to her being my wife, and me being her husband.  As well as that, I’m looking forward to living with her, starting a home with her… basically all of the things that come with being married haha.

When’s the big day?!
July 28!  I honestly can’t believe how quickly time is going by, but to say I’m excited about that would be an understatement.

The happy couple! Hannah Scearce and Joe Hawksworth

What is the best relationship advice you can give to someone?
Be in rhythm with yourself before you try to be in rhythm with someone else.   Basically, you need to be comfortable and content being single.  As soon as you are truly content with that, you set yourself up to be in a solid relationship.

Celebrity crush? Man and/or female.
Male – Ryan Gosling and Cristiano Ronaldo
Female – Jessica Biel, Sophia Bush, and Keira Knightley

Favorite date place in Boone?
Primo’s.  They have great food and a great atmosphere.  Definitely worth checking out if you haven’t been before.

Since this week is Africa Week on campus, it is only right that our campus cutie for this week is from Africa. I had the chance to speak with Mohamed Elghol, a junior who shares with me some interesting things about himself and his future goals.

Name: Mohamed Elghol
From: Sudan in Africa
Sign: Sagittarius
Major: Criminal Justice with a minor on Business

What do you plan on doing with your degree in criminal justice?
I plan on one day working for the FBI or CIA.

So you want to be a spy?
No I want to be an investigator. If that doesn’t work out then I plan on starting my own business. Not too sure what type of business but I know I want to be able to give back and also help others.

How would you describe your clothing style?
City Boy!

Where do you like to shop?
I like to shop at different places, but if I had to name a few it would be H&M, Polo, and Lacoste.

What is your best physical feature?
I would have to say my face.

Lets say a girl wants to cook for you, what meal would she have to make that would impress you ?
Chicken Parmesan with some Hennessey.

Hennessey?
Yes, that is my favorite alcoholic beverage.

If you were to plan a romantic date for a girl you want to make your girlfriend, what would you do ?
First I would pick her up from her house and take her to a nice restaurant, somewhere fancy. After dinner I would take her on a walk through the park (not a park in Richmond). I believe that long walks helps you get to know the other person on another level; you learn things about that individual you never knew till that day. After our walk I would take her home, but she does have the choice to come back to my place. But since I do like her I’ll take her home.

Describe your future wife?
My future wife has to be funny, trustworthy, honest, and outgoing. I love an independent woman, but independent to a certain extent. I also love a woman who has drive, a drive to succeed.

Where would you like to go on your honeymoon?
Isn’t that the womans decision? But if I had to choose it would probably be Spain. I’ve never been, heard so many good things the country.

Do you have any long term goals?
Yeah! I actually want to one day start a family. I want to be able to provide for my children and give them all the things I was not able to have as a child growing up. Another long term goal I have is to be wealthy. Everyone always talks about how rich they want to be, I just want to be wealthy. Wealth comes with a lot, it is not just money. It also consist of land, stocks, and other types of property.

What is your biggest fear?
My biggest fear is losing my mother; I do not know what I would do without her.

Aw, there’s honestly too many to name. Like I could go with one of the classic ones like “Aladdin” or “Lion King,” or one of the newer ones like “Tangled” or “Wally.” I grew up as a Disney fanatic, so they’re just something I enjoy.

Which Disney princess would you “live happily ever after” with?
I’d be Jasmine’s Aladdin. Or maybe I’d be Mulan’s Shang. If I’m Aladdin I get a flying carpet, but if I’m Shang I get to enjoy the beauty of China. I like scenic places.

In ten years, where do you see yourself?
I see myself as an officer in the Air Force, hopefully with a family and kids, living somewhere that’s not too cold. I like the cold weather, but not the rainy Portland kind of cold.

If you could have one super power, what would it be?
Super strength, so I could protect all the people that I love and care about.

Describe your type of girl.
I’m into the smart and independent type who knows how to have fun but knows how to get things done, too. She’s the kind of girl that stays in shape and loves being active, and she gets along well with my family and friends. Oh, and she’s the type to put up with me being stupid, too.

What about women’s fashion do you not understand?
Wearing a dress in cold weather or wearing high heels over shoes that are comfortable. Oh, and wearing shorts with Uggs, too. It baffles me.

Do you GTL (Gym, Tan, Laundry)?
Gym? Yes. Tan? No, how can I do that in Portland? And laundry? Yeah, who doesn’t? If I didn’t do laundry, I wouldn’t have clothes to work out in or look good in.

Any special lady in your life?
The only special lady I have in my life as of right now is my mom.

3 turn offs: Rude mannerisms, no sense of humor, a girl that talks too much

A fancy dinner where we both dress up. Walking downtown or sight-seeing. Then maybe back home for movie and a drink over a light conversation.

Christopher: All right.
Christopher Gardner: You got a dream… You gotta protect it. People can’t do somethin’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want somethin’, go get it. Period. “
However, the quote I often say is “If you’re going to get wet you might as well go swimming.” To me it means you give it all or nothing. Give it your 100%. Give it all you got or don’t give at all.

What is your favorite movie genre?
Hard to say, either classic action comedies or meaningful movies like 7 Pounds.
I feel like I am the exact opposite of what people expect me to be, I say this because people have told me this straight to my face after they meet me. From what I’ve been told I seem like a “jerk.”  The first girl that told me that was in my math class and said she thought I was going to be a “douchebag and jerk.”

He’s charming, interested in law school, and wants you to get to know him. This week’s Campus Cutie is a motivated “townie” that values his family and his community.

Name: Mike Green
Class: Sophomore
Hometown: Winston-Salem, NC

HC (Her Campus): So, tell me a little about yourself. What are you involved in on campus?
MG (Mike Green): Well on campus, I’m a sophomore legislator for Student Government. I am also a mentor with the Protégé Mentoring Program for the Office of Multicultural affairs.  I also live in theme housing in the H.O.P.E House, which is an acronym for Helping Our People Excel. It’s basically a community outreach and mentoring themed house. We mentor and work with kids from the local Boys and Girls Club.

HC: You seem to mostly be involved in mentoring-based organizations, is there a reason why?
MG: Well, part of it is that I am from Winston-Salem so I take any chance I can get to help some of the more disadvantaged kids around the area. A lot of them actually went to the same high school as me so I think it’s really important to give back. It also goes hand in hand with Wake’s motto of Pro Humanitante. It’s something I really do believe in.  I really believe that we should stress service and especially giving back from where you came from. It’s always good just to help people. I feel like I’m at this place where I have gone through what many of them have gone through, especially with the PMP program. I’m mentoring a freshman so I have already been through what they have gone through, like starting college.

HC: What is the most rewarding experience you have had mentoring?
MG: The most rewarding thing is probably just the looks on the kids’ faces when we come around, you can just see their faces light up. They look up to us and admire us because we’re older and college students. Also because we have a lot of fun with them, playing video games, football and other stuff. From the looks on their faces I can tell that I’m helping them in some way. I may not be making a huge impact on their lives in that moment but I know that I’m helping them in some way, in some aspect of their lives.

HC: Why did you choose to stay in town for school?
MG: It’s the fact that I have a top tier university in my own backyard. I also have a lot of Wake fans in my family, so when I got that acceptance they were kind of pushing me here. When I got a scholarship to go to Wake, that sealed the deal for me. My friends always tease me that I’m basically still at home; like, “you go to school like ten minutes away from your house”. Wake does a good job of not making me feel like that though. Wake is kind of like an insulate community– a lot of people describe it as a bubble and it kind of is. I feel like I’m away at college not at home.

HC: Being from Winston-Salem you probably know some places Wake students should visit to get out of the “bubble”, or do before they graduate.
MG: Well, that’s tough because there’s not a lot to do in Winston (laughs). I’d say definitely check out downtown, that’s a really cool area. There are a lot of great restaurants on 4th street. Nightlife is picking up downtown in places like Ziggy’s. Wake students should definitely see what downtown has to offer. A lot of people don’t know this but we are called the “city of the arts”, with an art district. Downtown has a lot to offer but is often overlooked.

HC: What do you see yourself doing in the future?
MG: I’m not a hundred percent sure. I’m pre-law, so I’m thinking about law school after graduation. Possibly working in government in D.C.; probably like a lawyer or lobbyist. I’m leaning towards something in that intersection between business, law, and government.

HC: What sparked your interest in the government and politics?
MG: I’ve always been interested in politics and the legislative process. I can never see myself running for a government office and being a mayor or governor.  I’ve always seen myself as being a liaison for the people between the government – being a person who has the power to get the people’s voice heard in that legislative process.

HC: Who are some people who have inspired you?
MG: My biggest inspiration is my mom. She is a single parent and she had my older siblings in her early years of college and she still managed to finish and get her degree with two children. She has always taught us the value of education. She inspired me in terms of pursuing higher education and to push myself and never give up. Another person who has inspired me has been my pastor; I still go to my home church. He’s just a strong guy and stresses in the church to not just come and hear the Word, but to get out in the community and do God’s work, by volunteering and helping the needy.

HC: So, how would you say you want people to see you?
MG: Basically in the same ways as I see the people who inspire me in my life. I want them to see me as a person who is very hard working, determined, and very willing to give back, and willing to do God’s work. Ultimately I want them to see me as a person who excels, but never forgot where they came from.

HC: Describe your most embarrassing moment since being at Wake.
MG: We threw a party [in the house I live in] at the beginning of the school year and during the party I got nailed in the face with a can. I still have a scar from it. I was standing next to the guy someone was trying to throw a drink to; they missed and hit me. It was kind of embarrassing because I think everyone saw it. I’m fine now though (laughs).

HC: What is an embarrassing moment you have had trying to talk to a girl?
MG: I go to Take Two in Benson and get the corn beef Reuben for lunch, it’s my favorite sandwich from there.  It has sauerkraut on it, which tends to make your breath stink. After I finished eating I tried to talk to this girl and she was really blunt and just flat out told me my breath reeked. It was kind of embarrassing (laughs).

HC: What is one thing girls do that you really don’t like?
MG: When girls wear a lot of makeup, especially the colored stuff on their eyes – colored eye shadow or whatever. Especially when it matches their outfit, that’s the worst. It’s just a bit too much.

HC: What is one of your guilty pleasures?
MG: I like Real Housewives of Atlanta; those girls are crazy. It’s a funny show. I’m kind of a fan of reality TV.

HC: What is your favorite thing about the fall?
MG: My grandma makes pumpkin pie, so I always like to have some of her pie on Thanksgiving.

HC: Since it’s almost the end of the semester, do you have any advice for freshman that might have first-semester regrets?
MG: Don’t lose focus. I know when springtime comes around people like to go out and have fun. It’s important to have a good freshman year because it’s just downhill from there, and just gets harder. Just make sure you stay focused in your classes and do your best.  Also get involved around campus.

HC: Next semester is an important time for sophomores, what are your plans for spring semester?
MG: My goal is to get admitted to the business school and declare myself a Business and Enterprise Management major. That’s like my biggest goal right now, so I’m focusing on my pre-recs. Another smaller goal is to get hired back at the Bridge. I worked there over the summer while at summer school; so I hope to get some hours next semester and start making money (laughs).

HC: What do you want readers to know about you?
MG: I am a very personable person. I always want to meet new people. So if you read this article and see me around campus, don’t be afraid to come up and introduce yourself because I’m always excited to meet new people!

Looking for a hottie to watch a scary movie and snuggle up with this weekend? Then you’ve come to the wrong place, because this week’s campus cutie is not on board. But if you want a straightforward, southern gentleman, Jamal Gaddis is your guy. If you see him in the DUC, he probably won’t go out of his way to impress you because what you see is what you get (And let’s face it, he doesn’t really need to go out of his way – he’s just an impressive guy.) But if you have any resemblance to Rashida Jones and are lucky enough to accompany him on a date, he’ll treat you like a queen. An Amazonian queen on a safari, to be a little more specific.

Name: Jamal Gaddis
Hometown: New Orleans, LA
Major: Biology

On Campus Activities: Sigma Chi and Coaches for Kids

What’s your favorite place on campus?
Porch in front of Hitzeman where I live.

Do you have any secret talents?
I try to show off all my talents as much as possible. But I’d say I’m a pretty good artist – I’m pretty good with pencil and charcoal. I draw nature – I like to draw trees.

Why trees…?
They’re completely unstructured! Well I guess they’re structured…but non-geometric. And I like to climb them.

Any other talents we should know about?
Whistling. And snapping.

Hmmm, so you have rhythm?
Yeah, I guess you could say that.

Favorite scary movie: I hate scary movies!

Sorry, forget I asked. Describe your ideal date
Well, first we’d go on a bird watching tour in the Amazon. And we’d float down the Amazon River and try to catch piranhas. Then we’d find a nice camp spot and grill up some piranha with a side of Amazonian bird. And some local fruits. Actually, I don’t wanna eat the birds….I love birds.

(Ladies, any takers?!)

Interesting…What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to impress a girl?
I really try not to try to impress girls. I feel like it makes me not act like myself.

What’s the first thing you notice about a girl? Her face.

A little more specific, please.
Definitely her eyes.

What about personality?
Humor. Easily. And candor.

Biggest turnoff: Dishonesty. Like when I can tell she’s not acting like herself.

Celebrity crush: Rashida Jones

Best compliment you’ve ever gotten:
This girl said I made her laugh without even trying. I thought that was pretty cool.

What’s the best Halloween costume you’ve ever had?
I don’t remember any of my Halloween costumes…I think I just drew a bat on my face.

Oh right, I forgot you’re an artist. How’d you celebrate Halloween this year?
Well, for actual Halloween, I had to study…

Things you can’t live without: Basketball, my family.

Interests: Intellectual conversations, music, reading, and of course basketball.

Favorite Movie: Love & Basketball
Favorite Song: The Ride-Drake Ft. The Weeknd
Favorite Book: The Great Gatsby
Favorite Professional Athlete: Chris Paul

What do you do on campus?
I am on the Men’s basketball team.

What’s one girl trend you don’t understand?
Rain boots with leggings….like if it is raining, why the leggings; if it isn’t raining, why the rain boots?

What do you look for in a girl? How about a deal breaker?
She has to be pretty in the face, great hair, and a smile. I am a huge fan of long legs, but also short, petite, cute girls. A girl has to be able to make me genuinely laugh, not just because she is pretty, so I do it to be nice. A deal breaker? I would have to say a lot of attitude; I do not have time for that.

If a girl offered to make you dinner, what would you ask her to cook?
Mmm, I would ask her to cook chicken cooked with spinach, tomatoes, and peppers on top of pasta. It is my mom’s best meal, and if she wants me to spend dinners with her she has to be able to cook, because going out can get expensive. If she can’t cook, I will be spending more of those dinners with my mother.

What’s your most embarrassing moment?
My first kiss.

What’s your favorite pick-up line?
Girl you look so good I wish I could plant you and grow a whole field of y’all.

What makes you different from the average Colby student?
I could state the obvious…

What’s #1 on your Colby bucket list?
Actually get a girl with my favorite pick up line.

How did your first kiss go down?
I was in second grade, and the girl I had a crush on was “moving on” from my elementary school. I started to cry at the ceremony and she came and gave me a kiss. I swear I did not eat that night, just so I could savor that kiss. I did not want anything else touching my lips.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
It would have to be Florence. I am huge sucker for wine, art, and the romantic aura. I am for sure an undercover romantic.

Any guilty pleasures?
Umm…watching The Titanic…or other romantic movies. They put you on an emotional ride watching them.

What’s your dream job?
I would love to be “Hitch.”

What kind of shampoo do you use?
Head & Shoulders, have to keep the short cut free of dandruff.

If you were a character in the movie Mean Girls, who would you be and why?
I would for sure be Regina. I would run the evil, popular clique with no remorse.

Finish this sentence: if you really knew me, you’d know that…
You should never ask to watch the original Willy Wonka movie because my biggest fear are the Oompa Loompas in it; they horrify me.

British Boys. You see them all the time in movies. For example, Hugh Grant in “Notting Hill” or Robert Pattinson in “Twlight” or Ed Westwick who plays Chuck Bass in the popular show “Gossip Girl”… even Johnny Depp had a random and strange British accent for awhile? British people are in our movies, television and in our dreams, but what if I told you we had one roaming around our very campus.

Freshman, Olympic alternate in Amateur Boxing and Model, Chris Parkinson, actually may be offended that I’m discussing Brits as if they were some form of rare mammal, especially because he made a point to say that, “He is more than just his accent”. During our interview at Market Central, I got a closer look at the man behind the accent.

Tired from a day of training, with cuts scattered across his knuckles, Chris graciously met with me to answer some deep and intimate questions about his life and how he has adjusted to living in the States.

Tell me about yourself: (Feel free to internally read all of the answers in a British accent)
My name is Chris Parkinson. I was born in London, England where I have lived my whole life until I moved to America to start college this year.

So what was living in England like, tell me about where you’ve come from?
I did not come from a very wealthy family. I’m actually the first of my family to go to University. The way the education system works in my particular area of London is that the public schools aren’t the best so my grandfather decided that he was going to pay for me to attend a boarding school in the leafy suburbs. I then took a year out after high school to go into full time training before the London 2012 games.

How did you get into boxing?
My dad actually starting to take me to the boxing rings at age 8. My mom hated it, but ever since then I’ve been boxing. It’s been 11 years now. I fight in the middle weight class at 165 lbs, and I was actually also 2nd in line from having a starting position on the GB Olympic team.

What brought you out to good ol’ Pittsburgh, PA?
I actually received free tuition from a scholarship foundation back home to attend school here. All of my tuition, training and meals are paid, however, my room and board is not. My parents don’t pay for my room and board, so I pay for it through modeling in London.

Before you came to America, what did you expect would happen and how did you think people would treat you?
I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the movie “Love Actually” but it’s a British movie and in the movie, one of the characters travels to America. Once he arrived, the movie shows American girls falling all over him because of his accent. While I thought that was all nonsense, my buddy who had already come to the States told me that was completely true. And I must say, American girls do really enjoy my accent haha. It’s safe to say it’s a very good conversation starter.

…Now for the good questions.

Soo, what’s your favorite pick-up line?
I don’t use pick-up lines.

When you take a girl on a date, what would you do with her?
It depends on what I’m after… just kidding. My dream date would be to take a girl back to London and give her a tour, and let her meet my parents. There’s a place called the “Somerset House” that’s very romantic.

Would you say you were a relationship guy or a playboy?
I’d prefer a relationship to a one night stand any day. It just has to be the right girl. I’m not the kind of person to talk to a girl for three weeks and then drop it out of nowhere. I would never lead a girl on.

What do you look for in a girl?
I definitely look for a girl that’s sophisticated. There’s nothing more unattractive than a girl that has bad etiquette or is too wild. I do prefer brunette’s but I’m mostly interested in whether a girl is actually interested in me rather than being interested in what I could give them. I know the boxing and modeling thing is cool, but if a girl really tries to understand the other things about my life, I really appreciate it.

What is one think that has annoyed you about American girls here, because I’m sure they fawn all over you at parties?
I don’t like girls that will see me and add me on Facebook but will never speak to me in person. I also don’t like when they assume the stereotype that I’m pompous and arrogant. I don’t think I am! Finally, I wish people in general would stop asking me if I drink tea and eat crumpets.

What is one thing that you would like everyone to know about you?
Although I’m normally battered and bruised from training – I’m really easy to talk to, so if you ever see me, don’t be afraid to come up and say hi!

Name: John D’Olimpio
Single or Taken: Single and ready to mingle, baby
Major: History and theology

What he’s looking for in a significant other:
Someone who is compassionate, and has a good sense of humor are two big ones. However, the one thing I find most admirable in a girl is someone who embraces her flaws and imperfections. There is nothing more attractive than a girl who is just herself, completely natural, and doesn’t feel like she needs to try and be someone else around me.

Why he picked Fordham:
When I first started looking at colleges I wanted to stay in NYC, but I wanted a campus. Fordham is amazing for academics and the humanities. It was the perfect fit for me — not too big, not too small — it was just right.

Campus Involvement:
Vice President of the senior class on USG, Sunday school teacher at local Bronx church, a job which I obtained through the theology department, and model in the Fashion for Philanthropy fashion show.

Hobbies:
I love to cook. I’m half Irish and half Italian, but my Italian genes take over when I cook. I grew up loving food, and loving emulating my dad in the kitchen. I also enjoy martial arts, especially Brazillian jiu-jitsu, and witty banter and good conversation among friends and family.

Favorite Pick-Up Line: I don’t have a pick-up line.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Watching the food network, and shows on bravo.

What is one thing that you do not understand about the opposite sex?
Just one? Mixed signals. I don’t get, if you like someone, just be forward and don’t play games.

What is your hidden talent?
I’m incredibly flexible and I can juggle. I’ve also been told I’m a good dancer.

If you were forced to sing karaoke, what song would you sing?
“Lose Yourself” by Enimen. I rap that at karaoke every Tuesday night with my brother. If I have to actually sing a song, it’s usually Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle,” ts easy on the voice since I can’t sing for the life of me.

Do you prefer to make the first move or have her come to you?
I hate making the move, but rarely will girls, so it’s usually on me. Girls think they look desperate if they make the first move, and guys think they look creepy (girls take note — you don’t).

What is on your Fordham bucket list? Go to the bell tower.

Celebrity Crush: Close call between Mila Kunis, Kate Upton and Jessica Biel. I’ll go with Mila.

What is the best way a girl can get your attention?
Eye contact is key for initial attraction. Eye contact and a smile. Once we start talking, if she can keep up the conversation, and be funny, it’s a big plus.

What is your flirting technique? The move (ask me about it).

What is your life motto?
It’s always important to be confident, and to always seize the moment and don’t let opportunities slip away. One of my favorite mottos is from Mike Tyson of all people: “Confidence breeds success, success breeds confidence.”

What has been your best experience at Purdue so far?
My best experience at Purdue would have to when I was involved in Zeta’s BMOC contest and I got to perform on stage in front of thousands of people.

What is your favorite song of the moment?
At the moment my favorite song is “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line.

What is the biggest deal breaker for you when it comes to girls?
The biggest deal breaker to me would have to be when a girl thinks I know what she is thinking when in actuality I am oblivious.

What is your favorite pick-up line? Does it work?
I haven’t noticed a pick up line really used on me, but if you have a pretty smile then that works just as well.

What is your idea of the perfect first date?
My ideal first date is to really go on a simple movie date just to see if she can stand my dry humor.

Who is your biggest celebrity crush? Do you have any man-crushes?
My celebrity crush is absolutely Lea Michelle and Channing Tatum.

What is your most embarrassing moment?
My most embarrassing moments are when I trip on Purdue’s uneven and terrible sidewalks in front of people.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
In ten years, I see myself in either California using my degree or back here in Indiana, because I do like being around where I grew up.

Who is your role model?
My biggest role model would have to be my Dad.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?
Most people don’t know that I like to DJ parties and I cheer for Purdue.

Name: Jake Davis
Year: Senior
Age: 19
Major: English
Hometown: Sherman Oaks
Relationship Status: Sorry ladies, this one’ s taken.

World, watch your step, Jake Davis is about to make his move and his smooth diverse sound will conquer the charts as well as the hearts of many. He’s a 21st century musician with an old school flare, a presence that others gravitate towards, and an all around great guy. But I would not have discovered any of this, the first time we met, if I hadn’t given him a second chance. As fate would have it, I met Jake Davis as a would be suitor via the manipulation of my very clever suitemate Valerie. As far as first impressions go, I could not be more offended. Mr. Too Cool for school rock star, with the tats, the ripped jeans, and constant incessant drumming of counter tops and furniture alike. She couldn’t possibly have thought I’d go for this?

As if that were not enough, there was the over the top use of the word “douche”, dropped once every 15 minutes it seemed, and the bad boy attitude just sealed it. Like one of those bros you spot at every party with the naïve girl in the halter-top, this kid just wasn’t going to cut it for me. He was all bad news, I had decided all too soon. Still, inexplicably, illusively, mysteriously- there was something curious about him that just caught your attention and got you involved. There was something there behind the ink, and hair, and clothes that needed to be discovered.

What I found, was that I was a judgmental bitch because Jake Davis- the bad boy rock star- turned out to be one of the most kind hearted, relatable, hilarious people I’d ever meet at UCLA. I know, the bad boy with the heart of gold, really? Ridiculoooooooouse, as Jake would say with his classic trademark response. But this is just one cliché that works. He went from being that bro, to being my bro.  Someone who’s place I could crash at when I was tired, to walk me home late at night, who would come to give me classic words of advice such as “you’re putting the penis on the pedestal”. Having Jake Davis in my life brought me something no girl should ever go without, at least not in college, this being the bro experience. Because behind every good woman, is a good bro there to guide her through the troubles and dangers of college life. As an entire package of kind soul and cool, Jake Davis is definitely one of UCLA’s Campus Cutie’s.

What He’s Interested In:
I’m interested in music.  I write, compose, and record all genres of music.  As well as play most instruments, sing, and constantly try and get better at understanding audio science, technology, engineering, etc.  I’m a big nerd about it.  When I get interested in something, an instrument, a band, a phenomenon, I have to research everything about it.  I also like psychology, and biology.

Must listen to artist:
Hmm… Ellison Hall, The Beatles, Bon Iver, Guns N’ Roses, My Morning Jacket, The Four Seasons, Mozart, Frank Sinatra, Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky, Endless Hallway, Eminem, Secondhand Serenade, and of course, Vanishing Red.  It’s really hard for me to even pick just those few.  I really listen to everything.  And not in the way other people listen to “everything” (aka I listen to Kiss FM and KROQ!), I mean literally, all genres.  And I don’t just listen to them because I want to be a music snob who can say I like everything.  I’m just a fan of melody and rhythm, and to a mildly lesser extent, timbre, so it’s entertaining to figure out how every genre chooses to combine those 3 things.

Are there any artists you get inspiration from or base your music on?
No one in particular.  Although I’d say I’m really influenced by my friends and local music in general.  It’s a shame the L.A scene died a few years ago when pay to play came out.

Is there any other talent you’d have an interest in pursuing?
It’d be sick to be really bitchin at surfing, the ocean is so beautiful but there doesn’t seem to be much to do in it.  Unfortunately, I’ve never had the opportunity to try.

Describe Yourself in Five Words:
I like things perfectly unbalanced.

Your Perfect Girl: Someone with a fat foot.

Any Deal Breakers:
They have to be willing to sing with me, regardless of ability, or no deal.

Any exciting plans for next year?
I might travel abroad.  I’m also going to be working on 3 different records with three different bands (one being my solo project).  I’ll shamelessly advertise the facebooks here, they all have music up.

Name: Matthew Masin
Year: Junior
Hometown: Lincoln, NE
Major: News Editorial Journalism
Relationship Status: Single
Campus Involvement/Activities: Daily Nebraskan (Visuals Chief), Photojournalism program (Takes two international trips – India and Brazil)

This past summer, Sara, Olivia, and I had a somewhat unusual encounter with this Campus Cutie.  As a stranger, he asked us if he could follow us around while we shopped in Downtown Lincoln and film us for a class project, and we weren’t about to refuse (even though we looked absolutely terrible)!  Throughout the day, Matt probably got to know us pretty well…but we didn’t get the opportunity to learn much about him.  After sitting down and chatting with him, though, I learned quite a bit, and just HAD to share with all of you!  Keep your eyes peeled, ‘cause this is one interesting dude! :)

What are some of your hobbies and interests?
I really like music.  I can play all sorts of instruments, and I have been in bands before, but unfortunately they’ve all fizzled out.  I also really enjoy going on bike rides and just hanging out outdoors—playing frisbee, basketball, and sitting around a bonfire.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
I‘d like to be living somewhere other than Nebraska—somewhere in either the Northwest, because it’s beautiful there, or the Southwest, like New Mexico.  I know that working for a newspaper or photo magazine is exactly what I want to do, so hopefully I’ll be doing that.

I’m sure all the girls are wondering.  What do you look for in a girl?
Hmm…I like smart girls who can carry on a conversation and who understand current events and their importance.  I’d like someone who can keep up with outdoor activities and who has a good sense of humor.  If you can laugh, if you’re smart, and if you like to go outside…well, that’s good.  Having a good taste in music doesn’t hurt either.

If you could change something about yourself, would you?  And what would it be?
I have really big feet, so it’s hard to find shoes.  I’m a size 14; that’s the only real woe in my life.

Have you had any life-changing moments?  If so, what were they?
The first time that I went to India in 2011, I got to do a very cool thing where I went into this really small, conservative village where the women wore scarves on their heads and exposed only their eyes.  Me being a white dude, they always had their faces covered when I was around; but eventually they let their guards down and I got to see these women with their scarves off.   This showed me that if you treat people with enough respect and courtesy, you can easily get along with anyone.  It opened my eyes to the fact that race and gender have nothing to do with being able to cooperate with someone.

Halloween is near!  Can we expect to see you dressing up?
I’ve been trying to think about that lately.  One idea I’ve had is to dress up like one of the Park’N’Go meter readers, but that might make people hate me or get me in trouble.  There’s also this narrator in Moonrise Kingdom who has a beard, so I wouldn’t have to shave for that one.

Any favorite part about Fall?
I like watching the trees change, although that’s kind of lame.  Just the atmosphere of Halloween, the scary movies, how people get so excited for this part of the year, and the weather in Nebraska are all pretty awesome.

And of course I have to ask, what’s your favorite part of being a Husker?
I think the school has a lot of opportunities for all students.  If you get involved enough and find the right spot for you, and participate in activities that are out of your element, you can meet a lot of diverse people.  I’ve been able to go on these amazing international trips because of this University.
