HC Abroad: Loch Lomond Lovin’

Yes, collegiettes™, I’m finally writing about something other than gallivanting around Europe. After traveling during every weekend in October, I finally had the chance to explore my own backyard, a.k.a. see Scotland’s natural beauty.

My friend Nikki and I headed to Loch Lomond, the largest lake by surface area in Great Britain. It is nearly an hour away from Glasgow by train. As soon as we hopped off the train in the charming town of Balloch, we went to the visitor center across the street. From there, we picked up a map and planned out our day.

First, we walked through a wee bit (Scottish vernacular was bound to make it into this post) of the National Park. There were amazing views of the Loch, and thankfully, it was a beautiful, sunny morning! We navigated our way to Balloch Castle but didn’t end up going inside because we would’ve had to walk up a muddy hill to get to the entrance. We passed several people walking their dogs along the trails. It made me miss my dog at home!

We leisurely made our way back to town and decided to have lunch at the local inn. Okay, we were actually really hungry, and that was the first place we could find. They had a weekday special of two courses for only £8, and the food was great! I had mussels and fish pie. It’s practically a rule that you need to eat seafood when you’re by the water, right?

Then, we took a cruise around the Loch. It was really relaxing, and I enjoyed hearing about the history of the area. There is a five-star hotel near the shore that looks like a huge castle; apparently, celebrities frequently stay there, and I can see why! Another ancient building was turned into a youth hostel. See, hostel life isn’t so bad.

This picture is completely unedited!

After the cruise, we took the train back to Glasgow. It was perfect timing, too—it had just started to rain (surprise, surprise). I enjoyed my day trip to Loch Lomond, and can’t wait to go to Loch Ness next!
