Imagine being followed every hour of every day by a slew of intrusive, aggressive, and sometimes vicious paparazzi. Amidst the clanking of cameras, constant attention-grabbing yells, and blinding flashes, celebrities tend to become irritated and who can blame them? Their privacy is constantly being comprised. Unfortunately, some celebrities aren’t too good at masking their frustration with the paparazzi. Who can forget when Russell Crowe threw a hotel telephone, Avril Lavigne spit on camera lenses, or Britney Spears assaulted photographers with her umbrella.
This past week, a new celebrity can be added to the list of stars who have irrationally lashed out at the paparazzi: Russell Brand. Brand, who is currently in New Orleans working on his latest film, acted a bit rashly on Monday when he grabbed a photographer’s iPhone and forcefully threw it at a window of a nearby office building, shattering the glass and causing a scene.
Being the English gentleman that he is, Brand kindly offered to pay for all of the damage that he caused, both to the window and the photographer’s iPhone. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough for local police who issued an arrest warrant for the comedian on Wednesday. While most people would take a $700 misdemeanor warrant seriously, leave it to Brand to turn the situation into a comical matter. Brand took to his Twitter account last night to claim that his grief over the death of Steve Jobs was what caused him to act out. Brand wrote, “Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iPhone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory.”
The eccentric funnyman definitely handled the situation in typical Russell Brand fashion, but whether or not his fans accept his actions will be the true question. Who knows, Brand might even pull an Alec Baldwin and go on Saturday Night Live with hopes of comically justifying his behavior.
