Fraternity Banned After Members Harass Anti-Rape Protesters

On Tuesday, San Diego State University announced that it has removed Delta Sigma Phi from campus as a result of misconduct.

The fraternity members were accused of waving sex toys, throwing eggs and yelling at anti-rape protesters during a Take Back the Night march on November 21. Though Delta Sigma Phi has been in a bit of hot water lately over a number of alleged conduct violations, the frat’s behavior during the demonstration was the final straw.

“A series of incidents highlighted behavior inconsistent with the high standards that have been synonymous with the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity at San Diego State University,” the Delta Sigma Phi national office said. “The Fraternity cannot, and will not, tolerate blatant disregard toward our policies and standards for members and chapters.”

The scene caused by the frat during the protest only adding to their troubles, as Delta Sigma Phi had already been accused of hazing and alcohol misconduct earlier this year.

“There is no place in our campus community for the type of ongoing behaviors displayed by those involved with this fraternity chapter,” said a statement given by Eric Rivera, SDSU’s vice president of student affairs. “We appreciate the willingness of the national office of Delta Sigma Phi to step in and address these issues and take action with us.”

The Gamma Alpha chapter of the fraternity is closing and will not be eligible for reinstatement until Fall 2016 and, even then, the members will have to adhere to a strict set of guidelines including maintaining an alcohol-free environment and being closely monitored by a full-time house manager.
