Award shows are long. We don’t blame you if you tuned out after Hollywood’s best and brightest made their way down the red carpet. If you didn’t catch the whole show, we distilled it to the top five moments.
1. The red carpet
Let’s not kid ourselves, the red carpet is the best part of awards season. Our best-dressed list includes Naomi Watts in Zac Posen, Emily Blunt in Michael Kors, Jessica Alba in Oscar de la Renta, Lea Michele in Elie Saab, and Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta. Major trends include mermaid silhouettes, white and blush tones, all shades of red, thigh-high slits, and sequins.
2. Tina Fey & Amy Poehler
Expectations were high for this funny duo, and they didn’t disappoint. While discussing director Kathryn Bigelow’s film Zero Dark Thirty, Poehler quipped, “When it comes to torture, I trust the lady who was married to James Cameron for three years.” The celeb-inspired one-liners kept coming. Fey joked, “[Former three-time Globes host Ricky Gervais] could not be here tonight because he is no longer technically in show business.”
3. We all fell in love with Jennifer Lawrence
We’ve never wanted to be BFFs with a celebrity more than we did last night. Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for The Silver Linings Playbook and charmed us all with an adorable acceptance speech, thanking Bradley Cooper and her brothers. Out of all the actresses on screen last night, she came across as the most genuine and down-to-earth. Need further proof? Gifs tell no lies.
4. GIRLS won Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Congrats, Lena Dunham! We love her painfully honest, thought-provoking HBO series – it definitely deserves the recognition. (We really want to see Shoshanna’s reaction to winning. Would she freak out like that time she had a Crackcident?)
5. Jodie Foster’s speech
Jodie Foster received the Lifetime Achievement Award and gave one of the most intriguing speeches in recent award show history. She spoke about the value of privacy, took a deep breath, and came out on stage. The speech was instantly controversial. Some admired her bravery, some thought the speech was a bit on the rambling side, and some thought she was already out. Regardless, it’s worth checking out.
