Nina Nesbitt Talks Ed Sheeran, Touring and Peroxide

Her Campus got the chance to sit down with singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt who gave us a peek into her exciting life on the road and in the studio!

HC: Tell us about a normal day for Nina.

Nina Nesbitt: There’s not really a typical day, not at the moment anyway.

HC: Are you busy promoting your new album?

NN: You would expect I would be promoting my new album Peroxide all the time, but it’s straight back into the studio AND promotion at the same time. It doesn’t go in one routine; it’s all just lots of different stuff, which is good! I’d get bored otherwise!

HC: Do you prefer one or the other – touring or recording?

NN: I like touring and recording a lot – when I’m touring though, I want to be recording. And when I’m recording, I want to be touring! Touring is probably my favorite though, because it’s like being on holiday and getting to play shows.

HC: Really? Like a vacation?

NN: You get to see the world, and the fans, and it’s exciting. It’s a good laugh as well! When you’re recording you are kind of shut off, and you forget that there are people out there listening to your music. Then you put it out, and you hear people singing it back to you, so it’s pretty cool. And then on tour you see what songs people relate to best, which is quite interesting.

HC: Sounds like you prefer touring.

NN: I guess…but also, I’m itching to get back in the studio and make new music. But touring…it can be exhausting, but after the third day your body gets used to it, and it becomes normal. It is so much fun!

HC: Did you have any jobs before you got into music?

NN: Before getting into music, I worked for a hairdresser, three hairdressers actually. I used to make tea for people at the hairdressers… Then I worked in a retail store, and I was really bad at my job. I just wanted to do music! I thought about going into psychology, but I chose music instead.

HC: We’re glad you chose music. You’ve worked with some incredible people – is there anyone you really credit with changing your professional life for the better?

NN: Loads of people! The people who took me on tour, Ed Sheeran, for example – that way I was able to play to more people. The guy who produced my record, my first producer, and the first writer to work with me was Jake Gosling. He’s a good mate of mine now, and he’s shown me how to work a studio! My label changed my life as well. My manager, Vicki, too! Really, anyone I’ve worked with over the years!

HC: Touring with Ed had to have been incredible. What other incredible moments stick out to you?

NN: I got to sing the Scottish National Anthem at our football stadium before the game against Belgium last September. That was pretty surreal! There were 50,000 football fans singing along with me.

HC: Is there anything you think about to inspire you and keep you going?

NN: I always think of the next thing, like ‘what are we going to do next?’ That’s always in the back of my mind.

HC: Any advice you could share with our readers who want to get into the music industry?

NN: Upload videos online! Get your personality across, and build it up from there. Play lots of gigs – anything to get experience. And then look at people who inspire you, see what they’ve done, and try to do that as well!
