Horses and Bayonets: Halloween Costume from the Third Presidential Debate

With the election right around the corner, Halloween is the perfect time to show some political pride. And for all the Halloween hipsters out there, our suggested Fired Big Bird and Binders Full of Women costumes might be too blasé at this point (I mean, are we really still on jokes from the first two debates?!). If that’s the case for you, then you’ve got to dress up as something from the third presidential debate. So here we are with our suggested costume: Horses and Bayonets!

If you missed the quote that caused this phrase to light up across the internet, here’s a helpful little GIF to give you a quick glimpse into the heart of last night’s foreign policy debate:

Dress up as an under-funded Army unit of Horses and Bayonettes (dare we say group costume?) if you want to poke fun at the candidates. First, start off in army print: throw on some army print pants (left over from a Mean Girls costume of army pants and flip flops, anyone?), army t-shirt, and even a hat if you have it! Then, just add horses. Grab a horse-head-on-a-stick, and pick up a play rifle at your local Halloween store. Can’t find one with a bayonet? Just grab a toy sword and tape it on the end of your toy gun… This costume really isn’t about being realistic!

Then, of course, add some political spin! Carry a sign demanding more funding for your Horse and Bayonet unit, and protest all night that neither candidate seems to care about your important branch of the military. This costume is perfect for those who don’t really feel like choosing sides, and are just fed up with all the grandstanding and exaggeration coming from both parties in the days leading up to the election. If you were as disappointed as blogger Brian Jencunas from The Huffington Post was with the debate, this could be the costume for you.

The Horses and Bayonets line was just one of the many zingers traded between the candidates last night, so check out this recap from the SFGate for more!

And, of course, let us know what political costumes you’ll be donning this Halloween!
