Now that Ryan Gosling has publicly announced he is taking a break from acting, Hollywood is in desperate need of another golden boy. We’re not expecting a new “Hey Girl” meme series– we just want another it-guy to gush over. Fortunately, it seems as if we have a replacement: Joseph Gordon-Levitt. 1. Both were child actors.
Remember that kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun? Yup, that was Joseph Gordon-Levitt. What about that boy in Angels in the Outfield? Still Joe. Though Gosling’s work on Mickey Mouse Club was adorable, we must admit that we’re impressed with Gordon-Levitt’s resume.
2. Both were GQ cover stars.
The men’s magazine is notorious for featuring stylish men on every month’s cover. Ryan Gosling? Check. Joseph Gordon-Levitt? Check. Coincidence? We think not!
3. Both have singing chops.
We’ve all seen that video of young Gosling singing (alongside Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez) and watched him carry a tune in Blue Valentine, but let’s not forget that he is also in the band Dead Man’s Bones. If you weren’t aware, Gordon-Levitt’s singing career consists of more than the drunken karaoke scene in 500 Days of Summer. As the creator of HitRecord, JGL is known to drop a beat or two at the organization’s concerts. Music to our ears!
4. Both of them can rock a pair of hipster glasses.
Let’s be honest, we kind of have a thing for guys who can rock the nerdy chic look. Both of these hunks have been spotted wearing very indie pairs of glasses. Be still, our hearts.
5. They both have upcoming directorial debuts.
There comes a time in every successful actor’s life when he craves to be behind the camera. For these two guys, that time is now. Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon’s Addiction hits theaters in October while Ryan Gosling’s How to Catch a Monster is just starting production.
6. They both have hot bodies.
Let’s be honest: we love nothing more than seeing our favorite Hollywood hunk’s abs flashed across the screen. We all remember Gosling’s Crazy, Stupid Love shirtless scene—it seriously did look like he was photoshopped! So what about Gordon-Levitt? Maybe you missed it, but we got a glimpse of the star’s hot bod during his most recent Saturday Night Live appearance.
7. They both take on challenging roles.
From a drug-addicted teacher to a gay prostitute who was sexually abused, neither Ryan nor Joseph are afraid of a cinematic challenge. To be perfectly honest, we kind of love their acting risks. Oscar worthy? We think so!

We can’t ignore the obvious: both leading men are ridiculously attractive. Lucky for us, neither of them are married—we still have a chance!
