How to Make Your Dorm Room Feel Like Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SBU chapter.

Moving to college can be extremely intimidating and scary. No longer living at the place one has called home for years can be hard. I have learned what makes my dorm room more comfortable and relaxing to live in. With these tips, the transition can be easier for you!

  1. Plants

Plants are extremely helpful to make a dorm feel more inviting because they bring color to the room! Plants are also beneficial because they boost mood, concentration, and productivity. They also reduce stress and fatigue. In a way, plants are like a miracle worker and therapist, all in one!

  1. Salt Lamps

Similar to plants, salt lamps have many health benefits. Salt lamps contain negatively charged ions, producing cilia activity, keeping lungs cleaner! These lamps also act as an air purifier, help with sleeping problems, and reduce anxiety and stress. The orange light that comes from the lamp also makes the room feel much cozier!

  1. Plug-In Air Fresheners

Since candles are a no-go in college, the next best thing is plug-in air fresheners! I personally like to buy the apple cinnamon or pumpkin scents because it reminds me of home! My mom always lights candles at home, so these scents provide a little bit of comfort to me.

  1. Throw Pillows and Blankets

Throw pillows and blankets have been key to making my dorm room cozy and comfortable! Throw pillows also make the bed look cute and decorative. Throw blankets are super helpful, especially during this chilly time of the year. I like to keep one throw blanket on my bed and one on my chair. This way, no matter where someone sits, they will always have a blanket to keep them warm!

  1. Pictures

Pictures have been my favorite touch to my dorm room! I like to have pictures of friends and family all over my room. Pictures make my room feel like more like home because they show me the people I love and care about. I like to put pictures either in frames or strung by fairy lights on my wall!

  1. Decorate for the Holidays!

One thing I have enjoyed to do so far, is decorating my room for fall and Halloween! Since my mom always decorated the house for the seasons and holidays, decorating mine has made it feel more home-like. It can be super easy and cheap too! I have found a bunch of cheap decorations at Walmart, Marshall’s, and Target! I have also found cute décor on amazon, if you’d rather not make a trip to the store.

These are the things that have made my dorm room feel more like home. Decorating with things that remind me of my friends and family have helped me the most with making my room comfortable. Objects that help reduce stress and calm your nerves also helped. Once again, moving to college is new and intimidating, but these tips can hopefully help make that transition more comfortable and inviting!

As an honors student of St. Bonaventure University, it is my objective to pursue a career that will complement my passion for working with people, my dedication to exceeding goals, and my motivation to innovate. The industries that I hope to make a difference in are fashion, media, and business.
