Facebook Etiquette for Pre-Collegiettes: To Friend or Not to Friend

It’s official. You’ve put down your deposit, filled out your housing survey and are anxiously awaiting information about orientation weekend. Now that you’ve decided where you’re going next year, it’s understandable that you’re excited about your school and want to turn to Facebook to reach out to your fellow pre-collegiettes™ in the Class of 2015.
It’s intimidating to head to a campus where you don't know anybody, so it makes sense that you want to get to know people before you arrive. Keep in mind though, that everybody is in the same boat as you—heading to a brand new place with very few solidified friendships or connections, if any at all. As a result, your first instinct may be to start with Facebook.
But should you reach out to everybody in your school’s network? Should you create a group for all the girls who will be living on your floor? What about one for all the people in your major? What is the proper Facebook etiquette for getting in touch with people going to your school? Have no fear, pre-collegiettes™. HC has pulled together some helpful dos and don’ts before you step into Facebook territory.
About the Author
Biography
Taylor Trudon (University of Connecticut ’11) is a journalism major originally from East Lyme, Connecticut. She is commentary editor of the student newspaper, The Daily Campus, a blogger for The Huffington Post and is a proud two-time 2009 and 2010 New York Women in Communications scholarship recipient. She has interned at Seventeen and O, The Oprah Magazine. After college, Taylor aspires to pursue a career in magazine journalism while living in New York City. When she's not in her media bubble, she enjoys making homemade guacamole, quoting John Hughes movies and shamelessly reading the Weddings/Celebrations section of The New York Times on Sundays (with coffee, of course).

This is so true. My best friend made our class facebook page & has forever been known as Katie from Facebook. You can make some really great connections through class facebook groups though so do not underestimate them - that's how I first met my boyfriend of 3 years & my roommate from sophomore year.
Sounds like you ripped some things off from the blog post on USA Today College "Do's and Dont's of the Class of 2015 Facebook Group" without even sourcing it...kinda lame
Actually, the writer gathered ideas and quotes from students across the country via email surveys. Nice try, though.
hi-five to that :)
