Lose the Freshman 15: Try a smoothie for dessert

Right after I finish the last bite of my dinner I think about what I will eat for dessert, and I don’t feel complete unless I eat something that satisfies my sweet tooth.

But dessert doesn’t have to include 500 calories of fat.

One of my favorite guilt-free desserts is a smoothie. And as the humid summer months approach, a smoothie is a perfect way to end the day, and its natural sugars give me energy to finish my work.

But be warned: Not all smoothies are healthy. Some smoothies can pack on as many calories as an ice cream sundae. Keep your smoothie slim by avoiding ingredients such as chocolate and sugary fruit juices.

Recently, I can’t get enough of my homemade smoothies. By making them in my apartment I save money and choose exactly what I want in my smoothie. My personal favorite includes strawberries, peaches and bananas.

And the best part about them is you don’t have to be a gourmet chef. Anyone can do it.

Here is how I make my personal favorite:

You need:

  • A blender
  • frozen strawberries
  • frozen peaches
  • bananas
  • low-fat original Kefir (found near the milk and has the consistency of yogurt)
  • pomegranate juice

Just blend about the same amount of each of these ingredients in a blender, pour into a glass, and enjoy! I promise you won’t regret it, and you will feel great afterward. Not only will you enjoy a refreshing dessert, but in one smoothie you will consume many servings of fruit and few calories.

What is your favorite smoothie combination?
