Lose the Freshman 15: Shop for spring’s best fruit

I love fruit.

I eat it like it’s candy, which I guess is a good thing for a diet

It’s satisfying to end every meal with a piece of fruit. You get the sweet satisfaction without the added calories.

But fruit tastes best when it is in season. Different fruits taste better at different times of the year. Peaches, for example, are in season during the summer months, so if you buy one now, it won’t taste as sweet and juicy as it will in a couple of months.

And with spring in full swing, spring fruits are at their bests. When I went to the grocery store today, I couldn’t stay away from the fruit section. Here are some of spring’s best, according to fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org.

Honeydew Melon

  • This fruit is sweet and high in vitamin C
  • Keep it out of the fridge for a few days to maximize sweetness.

Mangos

  • High in vitamin A and vitamin C
  • It’s the perfect time to add mango to your smoothie

Pineapple (My personal spring favorite)

  • High in vitamin C
  • Grill pineapples for a unique spin on the fruit and a great dessert

Strawberries

  • High in vitamin C and folate
  • Great addition to a salad or a perfect mid-day snack
  • Choose strawberries that are firm and bright red

And some fruits, such as apples and bananas, are in season year-round. Both are staples on my weekly shopping list. Try a new fruit in season this week to add variety to your shopping list. You may even find a new favorite.
