Why Choose UNL?
"I chose Lincoln because it still had the big campus feel but not as large of a student population, it was closer to home but not too close, and it allowed for me to dual major without overwhelming me! And of course the Greek system was a huge benefit as well!"
"I chose Lincoln because it seemed like the best fit for me. I didn't want to go too far from home, my brother goes here too, and it has the big school feel--which is something I absolutely needed in a university. I was the girl in high school at every sporting event so I wanted to go to a school that would allow me to carry on with that part of my personality. The football team and incredible amount of school spirit do just that. I also loved that the Greek system is big here because I'd wanted to rush since the seventh grade."
"I am obsessed with The University of Nebraska because of the genuine nature from the students, staff and overall Nebraska community possesses. I have lived in a variety of places and I value kindness. The university is in line with my values. There are incredible opportunities and the education is well respected. Lastly, there is student organizations that are one of a kind at Nebraska. (NHRI) The Greek community promotes positive leadership within the university and we have created a positive connotation among the entire campus."
"Far from home, school spirit, Greek life, my major, awesome place, a girl I knew well went here and showed me around."
"I chose to go to UNL because I knew I wanted to go far away from home and I have family that lives in Omaha so I figured that it'd be nice to have family kind of close if I was going to go so far from home. And then when I visited here I fell in love with the campus."
"I chose UNL because it is a great school with a good Greek system and tons of school spirit! Also my mom is from Nebraska and attended UNL as well. Originally I was not interested at all but one day I just decided it had all of the qualities I was looking for... even though it has the worst (freezing) weather! From Arizona that was tough to commit too but now I’m here and I love it (and the freezing weather)."
"The school pride. Athletic events, especially football games, are awesome to experience. Everyone really loves this state, this school, & our teams. I also love the Newman Center--great people doing great things."
"Nebraska has a great vibe. It is a big campus but feels like a tight knit community. You get to meet some incredible people here."
“The teachers are always willing to go the extra mile and take the time to build a genuine relationship with each of their students throughout their four years in college.”
“My favorite events are the homecoming parade, Monday night live, the big red welcome, and Team Jack.”
"Football is a major part of UNL. Gamedays are all about Husker pride, tailgating, and watching the big game."
"There are no underground tunnels to get to classes in the winter."
"Choosing your own classes with little to no help from your advisor."
"The worst part is that UNL is known as a party school and I feel like if you hang out with the right people, its not really like that."
"Some of the classes that I picked out were not what I expected them to be."
"I don't like that a lot of people don't take quiet hours in the dorms seriously."
New Collegiette on Campus
"My favorite part about freshman year so far has been all of the new people I've met. There are so many student organizations which makes it easy to meet people and find your place on campus. The husker games are also a huge plus!""Being a college student means a lot of independence, so I'm definitely enjoying that. At the same time, UNL makes the transition easy for freshmen so it's not too much at once. For fun, I like to take advantage of the free newspapers offered around campus and fill out the crossword puzzles!"
"I like how there is many activities going on during school. There are many clubs you can join! To be a freshman is a situation like if you are an explorer or something. You are learning new things and finding out what you really want to do and your goals that you want to accomplish."
"FOOTBALL GAMES ARE GREAT! GO BIG RED, GO BIG RED!"
"I love living on campus! I feel like UNL has provided me with great experiences in just the first semester alone and I'm definitely excited to see what the next 3 years will bring!"
"Being a freshman at UNL is fun! From living on campus to the activities that occur almost daily is really a great experience! I LOVE IT! GO BIG RED."
All About Academics"Sometimes its hard to get into the classes you want, but if you follow the system and sign up at the time you are supposed to its not bad, I don’t know another way they would do it though.""Depends, its pretty average, I have homework every night. I have a quiz for every lecture for a certain class, and there’s test throughout the semester, I have a drawing class so I have a drawing due every week, and lots of reading and papers for a different class.""I like it; there should be more advisors though. There’s only two in my college so it would be nice to have more. They are very helpful and know what they’re doing.""The library is a great place to study if I have a serious project to do, but if it's something that wont take very long then I usually do it in my room.""I have had some awful professors, I’ve had ten grad students not like actual professors in my four semesters here, but this semester they seem pretty awesome, I feel like I could go and easily talk to them if I needed help."
Learn From The Best
"My favorite professor at UNL is Scott Winter. He has a cool urban hipster-like swank. He always asks why and challenges you to do the same. His passion runs a lot deeper than other professors, or he at least shows it more. He is not afraid to try new things and step outside the box from how college classes are traditionally structured. His class is chill but engaging at the same time. Everyone is on a mutual level and he recognizes people's uniqueness-always searching for the talent in everyone. He also brings in guest speakers who are experts on different material in the class."
"Many professors at UNL are passionate about what they do and have a lot of hands on experience in their fields."
"My favorite professor is Stacy Asher. She is unique in her ideas. She promotes students to be who they are as well as who they want to be."
Interests & Involvement
“Students have the opportunity to get really involved on campus. There are tons of great clubs that students can join.”
“Some of the most popular clubs are the Scarlet Guard, Student Government, and Campus Nightlife.”
“A lot of teachers will tell you about academic clubs that you can join. Otherwise, I’ve heard about clubs through word of mouth or the booths at the Big Red Welcome.”
“I am in Her Campus UNL and love it! It gives me the opportunity to meet great people while writing articles and sharing them with the rest of the students here.”
“I think a lot of students join clubs to meet new people. It allows you to branch out from just your high school friends.”
"I really enjoy the team spirit in Nebraska because it's something seen not only on campus, but throughout Lincoln, the rest of Nebraska, and even on a national basis. The sea of red's spirit can be seen everywhere."
"I chose not to play basketball in college, so intramurals take me back to when I played basketball in high school. I get the satisfaction of playing a highly competitive sport without completely committing to a collegiate team."
"As far as football goes, I have been very involved being a part of the UNL Flagline. It's been amazing supporting the team for three years, all the events are fun and seeing the fan base is really exciting as well. The most exciting part I'd say is how involved everyone is, including the team, the fans, and all the student organizations. Everyone is so supportive and it's awesome to see that."
"Student athletes tend to hang out in the stadium where all of their amenities are, so it's not really convenient to integrate with the rest of campus except for when they go to classes."
"The energy that runs through the stands is incredible. Not only does the sea of red acknowledge how much our husker nation loves this state, but so do the motivational shouts that can be heard from miles away."
"I feel as if I'm not looked down upon by other guys and that the ratio of men to women is pretty equal."
"I think that UNL's campus caters to those who choose to demonstrate their gender in a mainstream way, in conservative conceptions of what it means to be a man and what it means to be a woman...I think there is a lot that could still be done to make UNL's campus more friendly to those who express themselves in different and unique ways."
"I feel really uncomfortable at the rec, especially in the weight room. I feel like women don't get the opportunity to use the facility as much as men do."
"UNL has sororities, and some activities dedicated to women. There are lactation stations and there is attention to reducing violence against women (and everyone). "
"The Women’s Center also provides a men’s program, which also serves women by working with men to further develop their concept of selves and masculinity in a positive way (since it is often defined as not being feminine or like women rather than from a positive this is what it is."
Food & Drink
"I have two favorites. Wings and Rings because it has a casual atmosphere, but is still quiet enough to talk or Lazlos because it's nice-ish, but still casual so you can go anytime."
"My favorite is Dozo in the Haymarket. They have really good sushi, happy hour almost every day, and the service is good!"
"My favorite is Sebastian's Table because they serve a lot of topas. You can share a lot of things and it's very social. It's very similar to something that we do in my home country, Norway. Also, they have good sangrias and other drinks."
"My favorite place is The Sultan's Kite next to Walgreens on 13th and O St. They have good food, fast service, and affordable. I like to get half falafel on rice with all of the fixings."
"My favorite place to go is Chipotle, and I go there because I find it irresistible, the food is too good, and too fun to not go there as often as I can. My favorite thing to order is the steak burrito with no beans, extra brown rice, salsa, sour cream, and cheese."
"Husker football is the best thing to do on weekends here. It's what every college kids' weekend is centered around."
"Drugs aren't something I have seen a lot of around campus or in Lincoln in general. I'm sure they are out there, but they are more on the down low."
"There is a frat party literally every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, which is a plus... unless you are a guy who isn't involved in the Greek life. The theme nights are always a nice break from regular house parties or downtown."
"I wouldn't say people feel pressured to drink on the weekends, but with not much else to do, it's what most of my friends and I find ourselves doing."
"UNL rides is my favorite! They give any UNL students a free ride home after a fun night out with friends, with your NCard present. Can't go wrong with that!"
“Dorm life is a whole new experience. It’s a taste of being independent and living on your own but there is still some security in the fact that there are so many people around you.”
“I love living in the dorms. I don’t have to have the experience of community bathrooms, but it’s like our own little city. I finally feel like a grownup.”
“It has its ups and downs. The upside is that I get to see people that I've known before college and even meet new people through friends but the downside is that you hear pretty much everything which can get really interesting.”
“I feel that dorm life depends on where you live and your personality. It can either be a great experience or a petrifying one. You just have to make the most of it.”
“I didn’t like it at first, but now I love how close I’ve gotten with the girls on my floor and that if I ever need anything there’s always people to talk to and study with.”
"The thing I like best about Lincoln is that their is a small town feel but the benefits of a big city."
"I feel like it's more of a college based town. There's always something going on, especially during the Husker games. A lot of people from other states come to Lincoln and we are a very spirited city."
"People like the downtown part of Lincoln the most. The vibe is very positive and there's always something to do."
"Lincoln is very alive everyday. There's always something to do and it's very easy to get involved in whatever event is going on. I like how there are so many student events."
"There are many local restaurants and stores in Lincoln by UNL. By far my favorite store would be The Black Market which is a small boutique offering affordable clothes for the typical broke college student!"
