Why Choose Union College?
“I applied to Union because I was recruited as a lacrosse player, and it was a competitive small Liberal Arts college in the Northeast! The academics are amazing, the campus is beautiful, and after my first visit I knew that this was the place for me!”
"I mainly applied to Union for its excellent academics. I was so impressed by the small class sizes and all the extracurricular activities on campus! It fit all my requirements!"
"I decided to come to Union after the first time I visited campus. Once I saw the Nott Memorial and the entire campus I knew that this was the school for me! It is also in the perfect location, about two and a half hours from New York City and three hours from Boston."
“I love that Union has a Division 1 Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey teams! It really brings together the school community and it creates a strong sense of school pride! Plus the hockey games are a blast to attend!”
“I love the environment of Union and the close relationships I have with my professors! I always feel welcome and walking around campus or going to the dinning hall because someone I know or am friends with is always there!”
“The small campus community is so nice and welcoming that it was an easy transition from home to college.”
"I absolutely love Union in the spring! People are constantly outside exercising, doing work, tanning, and hanging out. Spring term of my freshman year was one of the best terms at Union!"
“Sometimes I need a change of scenery and a break from campus, I really wish we had more shuttles to Albany and Cross Gates Mall!”
“I would like to see more class options when applying for classes. Sometimes I feel like I have only a handful of classes to choose from.”
“If there is anything I would change about Union would be the weight room in Alumni gym; they are due for more and new weights.”
New Collegiette on Campus
“There are three freshmen dorms but they are located perfectly on campus; they are close to academic buildings, the library, the dinning halls, and the Reamer Student Center. I enjoy that there is freshman-only housing because it really gives you a chance to get to know people in your grade!”
“Union offers many pre-orientation trips to close-by areas, such as the Adirondacks, and community service trips. I have heard only good things about the trip and it is highly advised because by the time school starts you already have some friends!”
“Orientation is a blast! You spend most of the day with you orientation group hanging out, playing games, and learning about Union!”
All About Academics
“Nearly every major at Union requires you to create a big project, presentation, and/or a thesis which takes up two terms.”
“Registering for courses can be somewhat hectic, but there are always very nice administrators who are there to help!”
“Since Union is a small liberal arts college it is not difficult to get into the classes that you want or need to take, yet there are some exceptions. I recommend that in order to get your ideal class at the time that works for you, declare your major, because this will help you get into classes that you need!”
“It totally depends on your study habits, personally I get most of my work done at the library, but many people do work in their Minerva’s, rooms, or other academic buildings.”
Learn From the Best
“I’ve found that the professors at Union are brilliant and really want to help and see the students succeed. They are very quick with email and they are always available for office hours. I’ve had some of the smartest and best teachers at Union College!”
“In order to do well in the class and get to know your professors. It’s highly advised to go to office hours. The teachers are very helpful and want to get to know you! In my experience I, and many other students, frequently attend office hours.”
" I love going to the Union College Division 1 hockey games because it brings the college community together and the team spirit is so strong at these games"
"My favorite thing to do since freshman year is go to the hockey games because it is such a fun way to meet other students and usually a fight or two breaks out adding some spice to the night!"
"I love the fact that I have my group of friends but I also have the most amazing support system with my lacrosse team. Since Union is a small school the sports teams are very close to each other."
"Sports teams at most schools seem to be cliquey but since Union is small everyone is welcoming and going to the games just shows your support for the Dutchmen and women"
"I am a "NARP" non-athletic regular person but my favorite part of the sports teams at Union is that everyone sticks together and we are truly proud to be called the Dutchmen and we do our part whether we are sitting on the stands or cheering people on."
"Since the male to female ratio on campus is split 50/50 it is quite empowering to be a woman because girls are never fighting over boys.. Well not most of the time"
"The fashion sense at Union ranges from girls who only wear Lulu Lemon, sports girls, preppy, edgy, and hipster. I would say our fashion sense needs to step it up a little ladies! I love to see the girls on campus who wear something different everyday because I truly appreciate individuality outside of the Union bubble."
"The best part about Union is that there are so many clubs geared towards women and philanthropy events are held frequently to help different women organizations. The Vagina Monologues are performed anually and they are one of my favorite performances to watch."
Food and Drink
"We have four major places to eat at Union but coming from home cooked meals every night and getting used to dining hall food is hard. My favorite meal is breakfast at West Dining Hall because we have the best omelette guys who always have a line out the door so you need to get there early. Another fun place for fried late night food on the weekends is Ratskellar that has the best wings. I do miss my mommy's cooking though!"
"My favorite food on campus is every friday Ozone House provides students with organic food from the area. This is amazing for anyone who is a vegetarian or gluten free and when it is nice out everyone sits outside, eats, and listens to music."
"I personally am sick of the Union food now that I am a senior. Living on campus is wonderful because I get to make my own food but it is also very expensive. The best place to eat is in our Reamer Campus Center it is called O3 and it is all organic salads, wraps, and fresh local produce. The line is always so long so you need to get there early!"
"It is a small school so everyone usually does the same thing such as fraternities or house gatherings and I love how when I go out I know everyone that I see unlike a big school where you would not see familiar faces all the time. When you go out it is so comforting to know everyones face and you can be yourself!"
"I love going to the frats because we have people that DJ and the vibes are amazing especially when you are dancing with all of your friends. We have a large electronic dance music following so the beats are always good to vibe to."
"The best part about Union is you do not have to feel pressured into partying because a lot of people attend events on campus especially the ones thrown by each Minerva House. The Minerva houses are one of the best features of Union because if you do not want to get involved in Greek Life you can get involved in your Minerva House and make any event you wish."
"Everyone is very friendly on the campus but the same people seem to go out every weekend so you tend to see the same faces. The best nights are when you meet new people outside of the social scene because it enhances your perception more of the people on campus."
"It is scary sometimes being a freshman and emerging into the social scene because obviously all eyes and ears are on you because you are new. For girls it is a privilege because you are allowed into all the events while for freshman guys it is harder to get into places even if you are on a sports team."
"What I love to do during the week is going bowling with my friends because you see everyone from Union at the same bowling alley. Another great place to be with your friends is Wing Night at Union Inn because the drinks and wings are so cheap!"
"Dorm life will be dorm life it is not necessarily home away from home but the dorms at Union when I was a freshman were my favorite part because I was on the craziest all girls floor connected to a frat so we could be as noisy as we wanted and walk around in whatever we wanted because boys weren't living with us. The dorms are so safe becaue you need a key card to get in and everyone knows each other so there is always a familiar face."
"Union ultimately has housing for everyone. As a freshman you live in one of the three housing options and they are all buildings close to the center of campus. As a sophomore most people live in Fox Hall, off campus, or in a Minerva. The Minerva houses are so clean and have hardwood floors; they tend to be quieter though. As juniors and seniors you live off campus or if you are involved in Greek Life you can live in the fraternities and sororities."
"In the spring is when the campus truly comes alive so residential halls will have outdoor activities and cook outs so everyone can bond together. The Minerva houses throw events all year round and anyone on the campus is welcome to attend. Usually most residential advisors will have activities with the people on their assigned floor."
" Schenectady does not have the best reputation but it is indeed a hidden gem. Downtown is the best place to go and it is truly up an coming with some amazing tasteful restaurants from Thai to Italian down town has it all. Proctor's Theatre has broadway shows and movies along with Bow Tie Cinemas. The best place for dessert is Villa Italia because they have home made gelato and pastries."
"My favorite part of the town is Jay Street because it is this hidden street with all different kinds of stores and cafes. You can get a coffee at the Happy Cappucino or find your inner hippy at some of the various stores on the street. In the Spring local farms and growers come for the farmers market and that is where most students go to get their fix of fresh food."
"The best breakfast place in all of Schenectady is Perecca's because they have this dish called eggs in purgatory that has their signature tomato sauce over it and it is to die for. You will see tired but extremely hungry Union students there any day on the weekend. Perecca's is located in the Little Italy area of town and is surrounded by the best italian restaurants in the area."
"I love going to the Kenny Community Center because it helps students from Union to get involved in the surrounding area to help those in need. There are so many ways students can get involved and the center has so many resources to help you find a way to truly give back to the community."
