Why Choose Oxy?
"Oxy’s small student body lets you feel like more than a number. You’d be surprised how many more people you get to know when you aren’t lost in a crowd."
"Spring Fest! Our yearly music festival has recently become an all day even with a real festival feel, artists that have performed include: Snoop Dogg, Common, Macklemore and more."
"I was drawn to Oxy because we have the only undergraduate program at the UN."
"I like how Oxy encourages its students to study abroad. About half of all students will spend a semester overseas, for the same cost as staying on campus."
"Location: LA has just about everything you could want from a big city (minus public transportation). Plus our location in NELA keeps us close to hip Highland Park."
"Definitely the Tiger Cooler for its burgers and pizza. Need I say more?"
"I would say the McKinnon Center for Global Affairs, the recently built center for global affairs features newly renovated Choi auditorium and a full media wall for students and faculty to digitally publish and share their research."
"Our bike share program is great. It gets you wheels when you need 'em.""There's nothing better than seeing the LA lights at night on top of Mt. Fiji, Oxy's largest hill."
"We still need certain offices on campus, like a Chief Diversity Office."
"Not all the dorms have AC and in the summer months it can be rough."
"Oxy has a great curriculum but we still don't have a Black Studies department. It's long overdue."
"I think everyone would agree that Oxy is very expensive. Financial aid is available to those who qualify, but it's an important factor to consider, for sure."
New Collegiette on Campus
"New students at Oxy will have a few options on getting oriented into college life before the semester actually starts. Look out for programs like Oxy Engage and MSI and definitely do them if you can."
"I went on one of the Oxy Engage trips before the start of my first year, and it helped establish a lot of my lasting friendships at Oxy. Plus I got to tour around LA and catch up on the tourist sights before acclimating to living in a new city."
"I can personally say that MSI, or the Multicultural Summer Institute, played a significant part in helping me form my social sphere before the rush of college started. It can help you navigate college life before homesickness really starts."
"I liked how it easy it was to make friends in my first year residence hall. It was a real community."
All About Academics
"We have 31 majors across 40 departments, plus pre-law, pre-health, and the option to form your own major with the help of a faculty adviser."
"Oxy gives students access to a full library with research advising, peer editing for essays, and a Critical Making Studio for all kinds of tech help and individual lessons from programming to sewing."
"You may not think it's a big deal at first but the 11:1 student to facult ratio is such a blessing. Professors can actually know you personally."
"The workload is typically challenging. Oxy's an academically rigorous school with an intellectually stimulating curriculum. But it's really what you make of it."
Learn From the Best
"Mother Goose to MySpace was one of my favorite classes last year. It really challenged the way I saw popular media."
"Stupidity took pretty much everything I thought I knew and flipped it on its head."
"Socio-cultural Foundations of Education was a formative course in preparing me for a career in Education. It gave me a clearer idea of what pedagogies I want to practice within the classroom."
"Vampires, Monsters, and Zombies in Literature and Film was my first year writing seminar, and honestly a pretty unique take on a formal writing course."
"The Death of Hip Hop: Liner Notes to Aesthetic Theory was an English class that examined rap as lyrical literature and musical performance. It was the greatest class I've taken at Oxy so far. I don't think I could ever top that class."
Interests & Involvement
"Oxy has really wide range of student clubs, from beekeeping to prison beautification club. A lot of the student orgs are activity-based but there are many cultural and sports clubs too."
"Most Oxy students are affiliated with at least a couple organizations on campus. It's sort of rare to find someone here that isn't involved."
"At the beginning of each semester you have the opportunity to learn about our orgs and sign up at the involvement fair. Also it's a big event, with music and dance performances."
"It's relatively easy to start a club of your own, if you don't find what you want already on campus. I've always felt like Oxy really encourages us to start our own clubs."
"Let me be frank here. Oxy is not a sports heavy school. It's lowkey."
"We're a small liberal arts school, and D-3 so no athletic scholarships. Basically this isn't a sports school."
"Tailgating and football games wasn't a part of my dream college experience, so I haven't really cared at all that Oxy doesn't have a huge sports scene. I think most people who come here just aren't super involved with sports."
"Everyone will tell you Oxy doesn't do sports, but they are here. If you want to be a student athlete, you can do that here. The balance is easier than it would be at a lot of other schools if that's what you're into."
"My sorority has given me an invaluable experience - in terms of college life and in my life as a whole. The friendships I've made with my sisters have been so important to shaping my time at Oxy."
"HerStory month is a fun time of informative programming at Oxy."
"I really encourage students to consider Berkus House, Oxy's only all women housing, if they are interested a living in an especially empowering and inclusive environment."
"If they can, incoming students should check out our Center for Gender Equality!"
Food & Drink

"The Cooler is the more diner type alternative to the Marketplace. It's burgers and pizza type foods."

"Oxy has a more laid back and chill social scene."
"We have greek organizations that host parties almost every weekend, and other houses off campus that have smaller kickbacks."
"It's nice to have frequent KOXY events that include bands coming to perform, or a little music festival type event called “Groove at the Glen."
"Don't get stuck in the Oxy bubble. Try karaoke in Little Tokyo, shopping in downtown LA, or Boba and hookah in Koreatown."
"There are a wide variety of living experiences you can have at Occidental College."
"I think Oxy has a pretty classic first year res ed experience. It's a bonding experience for sure."

"I honestly really like our location in north east LA. We're only like 20 minutes from downtown but we get to have our own nook in the city."
"Oxy's close to Highland Park, which is known as a sort of up and coming hipster neighborhood. So go there for both the trendy restaurants and the data for your gentrification research."
"York Boulevard's about a minute walk away from campus, especially if you live by Berkus Hall. It was named LA's coolest street, so hey."
"I say definitely check out Little Tokyo and Manhattan Beach for fun."
