Why Choose Mary Baldwin College?
"I visited and fell on love with the scenery both on and off campus. Also, they have one of the best education majors available and the classes and teachers are wonderful."
"Mary Baldwin is small so I felt like I was with family."
"I chose Mary Baldwin because of the small campus, more interaction with teachers due to smaller class sizes, and my major is here."
"When I toured the campus, I learned about how inclusive Baldwin students are to everyone, including the LGBTQ+ community, and that really made a difference to me."
"It was outside of my comfort zone and provided students with a nice environment to be able to focus on academic and community involvement."
"I have wanted to attend Mary Baldwin since 1984, but decided to marry instead. After a career in finance and being unhappy with working for the government, I decided to do what I wanted in life. So, I started from 1984 and I am living my dream!"
"Mary Baldwin has some amazing traditions. My favorite is Apple Day, where we all get up early after an Apple Eve full of fun and glean apples or perform some type of community service. Then, we finish the day with an awesome carnival."
"I really love where we are located. We're so close to 'downtown' Staunton, and the family owned shops are adorable. Plus, the student discounts don't hurt!"
"The traditions we have are probably my favorite part: Apple Day, Junior Dads, and Signature Ball."
"Two simple things: The view, and the inclusivity."
"It's hard to describe, but Baldwin has a type of atmosphere that is like no other. Come visit, and you'll see what I mean."
"Hunt food can be so gross."
"Sometimes campus can be a little boring, and there isn't much to do outside of campus."
"Not enough student resources, and students aren't properly informed of the resources Mary Baldwin does have, or how to use those resources. Most everything is student-run, so things normally aren't run correctly, or a major component is missing from the process. Our professors are underpaid and have more responsibilities than professors at other institutions, so they don't have as much time for students as others do."
"We don't get all holidays off."
"The stairs are definitely a struggle. They take a while to get used to, and since the entire campus is on a huge hill, they're unavoidable."
"Maintanence is a problem. It takes way too long for things to get fixed."
"The food is not good!"
New Collegiettes on Campus
"Orientation my freshman year was pretty cool. Some of the events we had to sit through were boring, but the ones at night were fun. I got to know my roommate in our free time, also."
"I was a freshman this year, so it feels like orientation was just yesterday! I still remember singing Lady Marmalade at karaoke in the Pub. Good times!"
"Spencer is the main freshman dorm...too much drama sometimes, but I was really close with my hall."
"The move-in process for the PEG dorm is very smooth. In fact, the entire dorm is amazing - the best on campus - so you definitely get rewarded for coming to college early, in that regard."
"I'm pretty sure orientation was like a week long, 'cause all the freshman move in early."
All About Academics
"The registration process is excellent."
"Sometimes it can be hard to get into the classes you want during the registration process, especially since random holds on your account will appear, but professors will give you an override if you go see them or email them."
"Your freshman advisor probably won't care about you, but as soon as you declare you can pick a professor to be your major advisor, and those are super helpful."
"The amount of time people spend in the library varies. Most students are under three hours a week, but I have friends who spend 7+ hours in the library a week. It just depends."
"I'm pretty sure all majors require a thesis."
Learn From The Best
"I really like Professor Hinks. If you get the chance, take one of his classes."
"If you're into philosophy, you should take a Dr. Scott class for sure. If you're not into philosophy, you should still take a Dr. Scott class. He's worth it just for his story telling ability."
"Biology of Women is a must take - very fun and informative."
"Take a class in the business department. You won't regret it."
"Professors are always
available during office hours. Take advantage of that, for sure."
Interests and Involvement
"Since we don't have Greek Life, clubs are really popular. It's all about SOULS (Students Out Understanding and Loving Students) and BSA (Black Student Alliance)."
"It's super easy to start your own club! My roommate and I did our freshman year. It was great."
"When I first came to Baldwin, I was kind of intimidated by the idea of 'getting involved.' Once I got over it, I realized that it's not a big deal. Just find a club you love and you'll be fine."
"Club Rush is a nice way to get a feel for everything that's going on around and on campus, but don't sign up for everything! You'll get way too many emails, and it's awkward to ask to be removed from their list-serv."
"We don't have intermural or club sports...that kind of sucks."
"The people that actually come to games get really hyped up and intense for us, which is nice. We don't get that support a lot."
"We lose a lot, but we've got a ton of spirit!"
"We're the Fighting Squirrels. Need I say more?"
"Mary Baldwin is an all women's college, so there is no lack of feminism or women empowerment here."
"As an adult male attending Mary Baldwin through the Adult Degree Program, it's sort of nice to see how the women grow when they come to school here."
"I'm a woman, and I love women. Baldwin is the place for me."
"If you're new to the whole idea of empowered women, coming here might be a culture shock, but you'll get into it. You better."
Food & Drink
"We have one dining hall on campus; Hunt Dining Hall. We also have the Pub, which is mostly open at the same time."
"Hunt food is fair/poor at best."
"My favorite place to eat off campus is Baja Bean. Great Mexican food, and great prices."
"When you get tired of eating on campus, there is no absence of affordable places to eat off campus, just downtown. A lot of students order Jimmy Johns frequently."
"The dining hall food isn't terrible, but you can't take anything with you. Our Honor Code says you can only take water, a piece of fruit, or dessert out of Hunt. You also can only get one plate of food. I think we need to fix that."
"Campus is pretty much dry."
"The girls who are here aren't here to party; they're just not interested. If you come to Mary Baldwin to party, this isn't where you should be."
"If you're looking for a good time in that way, you're gonna go off campus, mostly to JMU."
"This is one of the main reasons I love Baldwin so much: Girls are here to learn, not to waste their time on stuff like binge drinking and drug experimentation. That stuff is stupid, and Baldwin girls are smart."
"I like that there are so many different housing options. There are special houses, different dorms, and so many places to live off campus, but still close."
"The housing selection process is a point system, based on grades and other things. It works out nicely."
"Freshman dorms probably have the most 'dorm based' activities. Especially in PEG."
"I was really happy once I moved off campus. Sometimes it can be a little much when you're living with all girls."
"Staunton is a gorgeous little town--it gets boring fast, though."
"My favorite part about Staunton is all the restaurants! There are too many chains where I'm from. You can find those in Staunton, but there are so many locally owned places to eat as well."
"I love to shop, but there's not a great place to buy actual clothes in Staunton. It's a hike to Charlottesville or Harrisonburg, but that's where you have to go."
"If you're going to go anywhere, go to Split Banana."
"Downtown is cool, especially because we have Downtown Movie Madness. I won't complain about a free movie every month."
