Why Choose Denison?
"I loved how small it was; it is such a tight nit community and I wanted to be apart of it. It is also an incredibly stunning campus that it's very hard to not fall in love with it"
"When applying to school I always thought I wanted to go to a big school, but when I walked on campus it felt right. The staff paid attention to me, the students all waved hello to each other. It was so welcoming"
"I loved that at Denison I would have the opportunity to study, in detail, two very different things like economics and dance and that I can follow my passion"
"I applied because I was looking for a smaller school and I love the campus"
"When I did an overnight I realized how amazing the school is. Everyone makes up a super huge family where everyone loves each other, even when they don’t know each other"
"I love the small class sizes, the teachers really get to know the students individually. I feel like I am really being heard in class and throughout the school.A very well-known event at Denison is D-Day where a committee of students gets together and hires two artists to come and performs at our school. It's a free concert for all Denison students and is always such a great time!"
"The community at Denison is so close and everyone is extremely kind. The people are what make Denison so special because each person brings so much diversity and uniqueness. My favorite part about being a student at Denison is being able to connect on a personal level with my professors. I call most of my professors by their first name and some have them I have gone to dinner with or hung out with outside of the classroom. So being able to have a relationship with my professors is my favorite part about being a student."
"The challenges that Denison offers in each department are great, but difficult. There are no easy classes, they are all challenging in their own ways. I love the liberal arts education too"
"I love the campus, the serenity, the beauty and the atmosphere of as close-knit a community as us Denisoians are. As an international student, home for me is very far but Denison has made it really easy to be so far and it didn't take more than a semester for Denison to feel like home. I'm from a big city and was iffy about living in a small town like Granville for 4 years but I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything, especially with Columbus being as close as it is."
"My favorite part is that the students here are from all over the country and world! I love the bandersnatch because it's unique to denison which is awesome"
"Since it is so small, it can feel like high school sometimes because everyone knows what goes on with you, however at Denison those things don't defined who you are."
"The food this year is pretty terrible. Our main student union has taken away so many options and it's disappointing because that is where I used to eat often."
"Sometimes Denison can seem a little too small"
"The parties are a little annoying because unlike in big state schools when there’s “always something going on if you just look”, it’s not exactly the same way here in terms of just partying"
"It’s super super cold. I know this can’t be improved but like, Ohio weather is insane."
"Parking sucks, especially for Freshmen. There is parking for everyone but sometimes you have to walk super far to get to your car, but I guess we’re also spoiled because at Denison, unlike a big state school, super far can mean something like 5-10 minutes haha"
New Collegiate on Campus
"It was awesome being a first-year. Freshman all love on West Quad in a group of dorms around each other which allows them get to know one another. It is very easy for upperclassman to meet freshman; at parties, and mostly in classes. Most classes contain people from multiple grades."
"It's fun! There are a lot of awesome pre orientations, I went on one that was all about sustainability and farming. I learned so much!"
"Aug-O is the orientation program and to be honest, it’s pretty annoying, long, and stressful but it doesn’t even compare to the experience you’ll be having your first year. Just that one week sorta sucks"
"A cool first year tradition is The Sizzle, but you can’t know about it unless you go here. It’s not something you’ll forget going to, even once you’re a senior!"
"We love all kinds of girls here, even though the typical stereotype is that we're all preppy and super pretty, that's not always true"
All About Academics
"The most popular majors/departments would probably be Econ and Communication. Denison is a challenging school. You have to work hard I do well, but it is not near impossible. If you decide to work hard and do it, you will do well in your life."
"The library is definitely a popular place however it sometimes gets a little social and harder to study there."
"I think biology is a popular major along with communication. The work load is pretty intense but also very doable. I love the advising system because it is really easy to get to know proffesors and find proffesors that you click with. My advisor is awesome because she cares not just about my academics but all other parts of my life."
"The psychology program is amazing. The teachers are fabulous and all know what they’re talking about. They are passionate about what they do and the classes to choose from are super cool too"
"Course registration isn’t too bad…. It’s definitely easier as you get older. So don’t expect to get into the classes you like as a first year. Or a sophomore. "
Learn from the Best
"My favorite classes have been my Comm classes. It's my major and I absolutely love every teacher I have had so far and the courses have been SO interesting!! People DEFINITLEY go to office hours. It's a great way for your teachers to get to know you outside of the classroom and it is very encouraged."
"Office hours are so incredible. My professors have read every draft I have ever written and given me the most helpful feedback. Professors give so much time to their students, giving their personal numbers, staying until all hours, and squeezing in meetings while they scarf down lunch. They are so devoted. I cannot imagine going to a big school where I am just a number. My professors know me, my skills and even my personal life. Its irreplaceable."
"Since Denison is not a very big small, it is very easy for students to form one on one relationships with our professors at a personal level. They are more than our professors and our mentors, each department is a mini community and family within the larger Denison family. It is an incredible support system to have when your family and friends are not in arms distance to hold you up."
"I love Dr Weingart! The classes are small so there is a lot of class discussions. My favorite classes have been my biology and environmental science classes."
"Dr. Matthews in the neuroscience program is an absolute genius "
Interests and Involvements
"Almost everyone on campus is involved in a sport or a club. We have an involvement fair at the beginning of the first semester where students can walk around, learn about and sign up for any clubs they would like. It is also EXTREMELY easy to start a new club. Another great thing about Denison. If we don't already have the club you want, you make one. It's an incredible system."
"I am a member of a sorority and I play basketball. I also write for HerCampus, have a campus job and do broadcast for the Denison Sports Network. Usually people sign up for things they are interested in at the involvement fair and that's how you join clubs."
"This is the kind of school where you can be president of 3 things at the same time (not recommended, but possible). The school really encourages leadership and makes it very easy to do so if you want to. There are so many clubs to be involved in and take a big role in if you want to"
"DCA is a super cool thing we have at Denison. It stands for Denison Community Association and basically it’s an umbrella program for all of the community service clubs we have at Denison. It’s extremely well- organized and does a great job and making sure the programs collaborate frequently to make even bigger and better things happen together "
"Denison is not known for their athletics aside from our swim team, however whenever we have football games, students try to make it out to support our friends and classmates. Most of Denison's population participates in varsity or club sports."
"The most popular sports are football, basketball and soccer. Our school spirit is lacking, that's something I miss about high school. But the above sports get a decent amount of people at the games."
"This is an area where we lack in. A big problem in Denison would be spirit, especially in terms of sports. Not many people watch sports teams and its not like state school football game-type events, which is sort of disappointing sometimes"
"Regardless of the lack of sport involvement in terms of spirit, everyone still loves Denison. Like truly truly loves Denison, even though we say we don’t sometimes because were just typical whiney college students. Denison is our home and all of us love it and treat it as a home."
"A big sport team for us is Lacrosse, even though it’s a D3, people tend to know Denison a lot for it’s lacrosse team, and a lot of very good players get recruited every year. Usually men’s lacrosse is what we’re big with, more so than woman’s lacrosse"
"Women get a lot of representation on campus. There are many clubs that advocate for female rights, like Denison Feminists"
"Last week we had Jessica Valenti on campus—basically the coolest feminist ever. It was a life-changing experience for all of us feminists here on campus"
"Because Denison is so liberal, it’s really cool being here for women because we get the rights and respect we deserve. The women here stand for what they believe and follow after their dreams. We have aspirations just as strong and big as those of the guys and were treated as equals"
"Our women’s studies major is very popular and one of the most popular classes at Denison (maybe the most popular and hardest to get into) is Issues in Feminism"
"The gender ratio isn’t too noticeable. Obviously if you’re a psych major, there will be more girls than guys in your class but overall, it’s not anything to worry about. There’s plenty of guys to go around ;) "
Food & Drink
"We have 2 main dining halls and a cafeteria-type place. The two dining halls are ran by Bon Appetite and the food is pretty mediocre but definitely do-able."
"The Bandersnatch is a super fun place on campus. It’s only open at night but its 7 days a week and has THE BEST SNAGELS EVER (bagels covered in cream cheese and brown sugar). There’s also milkshakes and pizza bagels. This is my favorite food on campus"
"Kitchens depend on what dorm you live in on campus. Usually the bigger the dorm building, the smaller the kitchen weirdly. So the quieter and smaller buildings usually have really nice kitchens"
"Two dining halls! "Curtis" in West Quad and "Huffman" in East Quad. You also have Slayter Student Union as another food option. Hmmmm my favorite place to eat would be Slayter for dinner. Curtis has the best breakfast in my opinion and I'm a fan of their chicken fingers :)"
"The dining halls always switch food options up and have cool things to try out. I really can't complain. It's not like home cooking but it's still good. "
"There's parties in the senior apartments that have alcohol but there usually is a bunch of other things going on if you don't want to drink."
"The social scene is generally more inclusive. Everyone is so friendly and open to meeting new people that it feels like cliques aren’t a big thing"
"Greek life is pretty much the center of the social scene. Most parties on the weekends are thrown by frats but usually the rule is that if it’s after 11pm (especially during rush semester, in the spring) then it’s an open party. But before 11pm, the only people invited is the sorority that they’re having a mixer with."
"I'm from a city and used to constantly being busy/options to keep myself entertained, so being bored was definitely a concern for me. However, you'll find that Denison ALWAYS has something going on. Whether it's an event that Greek life or other organizations are having, musicians, magicians, poets, guest speakers, comedians, open mics, fashion shows, movie showings, improv shows, plays/musicals, the list could really go on forever."
"Most parties are held in "The Sunnies" and in social spaces are pretty inclusive of everyone. You can get involved with the party scene pretty easily but if that's your not thing- have fun without it!"
"For first year students you either live in West Quad or one of the smaller residential living buildings in North Quad (Like me! #BetaHouse) which I think is really cool. It gives the first years the opportunity to get to know each other and adjust to college together before being thrown in with the rest of the community."
"You can choose a roommate if you have someone in mind that you want to room with but most students do get random roommates. However, the Dean of first year students personally assigns students based on an extensive surgery every student fills out. So you find that in most cases "random roommates" are super compatible!"
"Denison is 100% residential, so upperclassman have their own apartments on campus. Dorms are very safe! You have 24/7 hour access to YOUR residential house but are not able to swipe into other buildings past midnight."
"In terms of bonding, usually your RA will do things like pizza night or donut tonight usually as a joint even with a floor meeting type-of-thing. It’s a great way to not only get closer to your neighbors but also get to know your RA better"
"During August orientation is when you’ll truly get to meet your floor best, because during the entire week of orientation your assigned group is your floor so there’s definitely a lot of friendships that happen there and last the rest of the year! It’s also a great way to become closer to your roommate"
"I love this town especially after staying on campus over the summer, I explored this town and now know it so much better. There is a lot more happening in town than most people think. I particularly love how home-y Granville and its residents are."
"Everything about Granville is the cutest thing ever. There’s whits (AKA the best ice cream in the world), snapshots sandwich shop, broadway pub, and The James Store which sells Lilly Pullitzer and Vera Bradley"
"People do like to go off campus, the closest big city is Columbus where Easton is (an awesome shopping center) and where there are a lot of good restaurants and fun things to do, like walking down Short North, or visiting neighboring schools like OSU"
"Granville is great! It's a beautiful "New England" style town that looks right out of a post card. The residents are super nice and will say hi to you as you walk through town. Coming from Chicago though (I'm a huge city girl) it is very different."
"I do enjoy all of the small restaurants that all have their own personalities, a couple shorties being "Broadway" and "Taco Dans". I absolutely love Granville during Christmas- the lights and holiday spirit is one of my highlights of the year! "
