We’re Finally Getting a New ‘Harry Potter’ Book This Summer

Harry Potter fans around the world were excited yet a little disappointed when we found out the newest addition to the saga, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, would only be performed in London’s West End. But now it’s time to bring out the butterbeer and celebrate: the play’s script is set to release in book form on July 31, 2016—yes, Harry Potter’s birthday!

Pottermore announced that the script will be released in book form—print and digital editions—directly after the play’s world premiere this summer on July 30. The play by Jack Thorne, which is based on an original story by J.K. Rowling, picks up 19 years after the boy wizard defeats He Who Must Not Be Named at the Battle of Hogwarts.

We got a sneak peek of this massive flash forward in the epilogue of the seventh (and what was then the final) novel of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and at the end of the franchise’s final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II. There, we saw the Golden Trio waving their children goodbye as the next generation of witches and wizards embarked on their journey to Hogwarts.

It’s been nine years since the last book was published and five years since the last film premiered, so loyal HP readers and movie-watchers have been waiting for what feels like forever to see how the rest of the story unfolds.

As if that wasn’t enough for our fangirl hearts to handle, Pottermore also announced the publication of a new edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them with new content by J.K. Rowling and new formats and editions of the Hogwarts Library books, Quidditch Through the Ages and The Tales of Beedle the Bard—set to release in 2017. If that’s too long of a wait for you, Jim Kay’s illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets will be released in October 2016.

Now, we Potter fans have more than enough to stay sane while we wait for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, premiering later this year on November 18. In the meantime, we’ll be rereading the entire HP series in preparation for The Cursed Child.
