This year’s Super Bowl commercials really delivered—they had us laughing, shedding tears, hugging our dads, and yes, engaging in heated debate. One of the T-Mobile commercials that’s causing a huge stir (and no, we’re not talking about Kim’s selfie PSA) featured comedians Chelsea Handler and Sarah Silverman. In the commercial, the two funny ladies are trying to one-up each another by bragging about how great their cell service is throughout their massive mansions—featuring kale gardens, petting zoos and trophy rooms.
In one of the scenarios shown in the ad, Silverman is delivering a baby in her “underground delivery room,” and as she hands the newborn to its mother, she says, “Sorry, it’s a boy.” Twitter blew up with angry claims that the joke was sexist. Some argue otherwise, saying that it’s fine to poke fun at men while we’re living in a male-dominated society.
As we’re pushing for a society where gender isn’t the deciding factor in everything from familial roles to the workplace, we understand the importance of equality on all sides; but we’re not totally convinced that this jab can be called out as a sexist one. On the surface, we thought it was pretty funny; but it also brings to light the fact that still, babies in countries across the world are often disposed of because families are seeking to have sons, only proving that society has a long, long way to go.
