We were obviously ecstatic to hear rumors of Princess Diaries 3 being in the works. Hearing it directly from the director of the first two films, Garry Marshall, didn’t hurt either. Chris Pine has also hinted that he’d be willing to revisit Genovia. And now, Robert Schwartzman, who played Mia’s first crush Michael in the original film, has said he would be interested in returning for the third film.
Of course, since we didn’t see Michael in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Schwartzman is fully aware that some logistics might have to be worked out to bring him back into the story. “I’d have to see where they’re taking it…What is this character now? What do you want it to be? It’d be cool to at least have the conversation about it if they want to do it.”
Since the films have taken somewhat of a different direction than the book series, it will definitely be interesting to see what the plot of the third film is. There are endless possibilities to consider. Maybe Michael could fall in love with Mia all over again, though he’d have to contend with Pine’s Nicholas.
No matter what path the film ends up pursuing, if the first two movies are any indication, we’re sure the third will be one to remember.
