Everyone’s favorite childhood book and movie series, Harry Potter, is making its Broadway debut soon, but that almost never happened.
In an interview for CBS’s Sunday Morning, J.K. Rowling said at first she didn’t want Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to happen. “I genuinely didn’t want Harry to go onstage. I felt that I was done,” she admitted.
However, she ultimately warmed up to the idea. J.K. credits playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany for persuading her and making the play truly magical. “I’m really glad I was persuaded, because I’m so proud of this play,” she said.
But if you were hoping for a sequel, think again. This play will likely be the end of Harry’s story. “Harry’s story, now, I think I’m done. I’m done,” Rowling said.
The play, which debuted in London and won over 22 theater awards, will open in New York on Sunday, April 22, 2018. As fans know, The Cursed Child picks up 19 years after the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. According to the play’s website, “it was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.”
“While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”
Ticket sales begin Oct. 18, so get yours ASAP. I bet they’ll sell out as fast as Hamilton.
