‘Hunger Games’ Producer Spills About a Casting Regret

It goes without saying that The Hunger Games movies have been widely successful, but the films’ producer, Nina Jacobson, still regrets how the casting was done, specifically in the first film.

We all remember Buttercup, Prim’s pet cat (read: adopted child) whom Katniss despised.

Well, you might remember, back in the first movie of the series, Buttercup was played by a black and white cat. This went against the description that author Suzanne Collins gave as Buttercup as a long-haired ginger cat. This mistake did not make Jacobson happy.

Jacobson revealed that she saw the cat the day it was being filmed, when it was too late to find a replacement. She wasn’t directly overseeing casting of the famous feline, and it showed. They were forced to film with the black and white cat. Jacobson was totally unsettled by the faux pas and let everyone know during filming. She persistently asked if scenes with the cat could be reshot, and even considered using special effects to make the cat the proper color.

Luckily, a new cat was given the role for the following movie, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire when the new director, Francis Lawrence, came on set. This definitely pleased everyone, including Suzanne Collins!

Did you catch the mistake when you watched the first movie? Regardless, if this was the only casting error in the movies, it’s a job well done!
