Courteney Cox Explains Why She Turned Down the Role of Rachel on ‘Friends’

There’s no doubt that Friends has made a huge impact on many of our lives. For most of us, sitting back and laughing while watching Friends is just like hanging out with our own friends. But what if the cast had been slightly shuffled?

According to HelloGiggles, Courteney Cox, better known as Monica Geller, was originally offered the role of Rachel Green, and she’s finally telling us why she passed on playing Jennifer Aniston’s career-making part.

I know what you’re thinking: WHAT IN TARNATION? It’s hard to think about the clean-freak, competitive Monica Geller being Rachel. It seems to me they’re polar opposites. But why did Courteney turn down the role of Rachel?

On Off Camera with Sam Jones, Courteney explained why she connected more with Monica. “I’m very similar to her. I’m not as clean as Monica, but I am neat. And I’m not as competitive, even though some people, my partner Johnny McDaid, would say I am.”

Was this what made the show so real? Actors who were just playing versions of themselves?

In retrospect, this show did make us feel like we were watching real people in real situations and real relationships. And that’s why we’ll always love it.
