5 days, 10 hours of sleep and 47 babies later...
Thursday, January 28, 2010
When I was little, I wanted desperately to be a cheerleader. A cheerleader and a ballerina and a Girl Scout. I couldn't wait for my first pair of heels, or the day I could wear makeup, or until I could curl my hair without my mom's help.
BUT, when you grow up idolizing your two older sisters who dedicated their lives to being KICKASS all-star soccer players, pretty pink dresses, barbie dolls and girly activies are a rare treat. Instead, I was given shorts and sneakers for my birthdays and joined every sports team my parents could find. Instead of after-school play dates at The American Girl Place, I went to sports practices with the boys. Instead of summer camp with horses and lakes, I stayed at colleges with intensive basketball training.
I have to admit, I didn't hate it. In fact, I enjoyed being a rockstar athlete (both of my parents passed down their incredible genes to me). But deep down, I wanted to be a girly girl that didn't have to run around and knock over other people and - most importantly - I didn't want to do anything that made me sweat. But those kinds of feelings (along with most other kinds of feelings) are repressed when you're in the Murphy family. So, in short, I stuck with it, grew up, went to college, and joined a sorority.
Now don't get me wrong, you don't need to be super girly to be in a sorority. Especially not mine. What makes Delta Gamma so special is that we are all alike in how we are all so very different. But, when recruitment comes around, there's not much choice but to stand in a line - shoulder to shoulder - and clap, bounce, and scream cheers as hoardes of girls walk into the room.
And, ok, I don't want to lie. I kinda like that too. Even though I'm the girl that gets in trouble for being the one that's always bopping when everybody's bouncing and snapping when everybody's clapping. What can I say? I just don't have much coordination.
My errors aside, we had a fabulous recruitment and met tons of amazing girls. Then on Tuesday night, while hallucinating from serious-lack-of-sleep-delirium, we welcomed 47 new babies into the Zeta Zeta Chapter of Delta Gamma!

(The Alpha Lamda class of Zeta Zeta of Delta Gamma)
And of course we played the usual ice breaker game where everyone tells an interesting fact about themselves. Over the years, I've learned quite a lot about my amazing sisters...
One girl was on Barney. Another was a child tv star. There's someone who did a commercial with the Beach Boys. We have TWO who are contortionists. Another hides her money in her kitchen. And, I? Well, I have flown a plane. (Yeah, you heard me! But that's a story for another day...)
So congratulations to the beautiful, new baby dee gees! And to all my amazing sisters who didn't kill me after passing into a half comatose, half clinically insane state of being this weekend. See y'all in a few days after I sleep for 72 hours...
(My little, my big, and me)...

OH WOW... So I just saw the story that Chandler sent Windsor about sorority recruitment at Cornell. I guess I shouldn't be talking about how tired I am from recruitment, because at least we are relaxed and have fun!! Unfortunately for the girls at Cornell, that's NOT the case at all... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/22/sorority-sisters-fashion_n_433491.html
