Biological Fashion: Identity Apparel

Have you ever had problems shopping trying to find that piece of clothing that really reflected your personal style? Well, now thanks to technological developments, you can create and customize your own garment using your own biological kiss print, thumbprint, or even DNA structure. That’s right- by simply swabbing a DNA sample from your saliva or with the big peck of a kiss, you can now express your unique fashion style with your own biological signature.
I first became introduced to this concept of biological fashion, when Windsor & I attended NY Couture Fashion Week. We had the pleasure of meeting two pioneers of biological fashion, Aram and Dylan, who recently launched their own clothing line, called Identity Apparel. These Canadian business partners have been traveling internationally to raise awareness of this new phenomenon. I had the opportunity to interview Aram, who provided an explanation of biological fashion and artistic source of inspiration for Identity Apparel.
1. What is biological clothing?
Aram: Biological clothing means taking the actual biological characteristics of the individual and building that into the garment. Our most advanced line is our DNA clothing. We take the actual genetic profile of the customer and digitally display a sequence of their own DNA into the garment. Our Kiss line takes the actual lips of the customer and imprints it into the clothing and our fingerprint line takes the physical fingerprint of the customer and builds it into the garment.
2. When and how did you have the idea to create Identity Apparel?
Aram: I was attending an art gallery last year and there was an art piece called DNA. It showed the actual DNA of the artist. I thought that was such an amazing idea, so after 6 months of playing around with different concepts of how to present DNA in an artistic format we discovered DNA on clothing. From then it took another 6 months playing around with how to make the product desirable to young people. We added the fingerprint and kiss imprint after because we believe that those 3 characteristics are different in every individual. We are constantly coming up with new and innovative ideas in genetic clothing.
3. What future products will Identity Apparel Offer?
Aram: We are currently launching our Identity Earth Line. It uses the same 3 product lines offering the same customization options, but we only use environmentally friendly fabrics (organic cotton and bamboo). We are also building pet addicted apparel. We are going to offer customers the ability to wear their animals DNA or paw print on a large array of garments. We plan to also offer pet accessories like doggy beds. That have the Paw print of the actual animal on it.
4. What is your history in fashion or science?
Aram: My partner and I have always been interested in fashion, but this is our first attempt at operating and designing our own clothing company. We are both recent University graduates and started this company as soon as we graduated. We both graduated with degree’s in Business Entrepreneurship.
5. When and how can young college girls purchase clothing from Identity Apparel?
Aram: Our clothing is purchased online at www.identityapparel.com. The site is very interactive and allows college girls to customize the garment until it’s perfect.
I also had the opportunity to create and customize my own baby blue long-sleeved shirt with a double-helix shaped red tree overlapped with a dark green pattern of my DNA sequencing (check it out on the left!). Another bonus: I have my million-dollar signature in bright red on the back of the shirt. It was an awesome experience playing with Identity Apparel’s t-shirt customizer, and I friggin love my new shirt!
