You Go Girl! How the FITE Campaign is Empowering Women Around the World

Between school, internships and attempting to have a social life, it’s easy to get stressed out and lose sight of how many opportunities we collegiettes are afforded on a daily basis. Which is why in the midst of my manic Monday, I was grateful to come across Kiva’s new FITE program.

Kiva is a microfinance organization (named one of Oprah’s “favorite things”!) that attempts to alleviate poverty by connecting individuals with aspiring business owners around the world. The FITE (Female Independence Through Entrepreneurship) campaign seeks to help female entrepreneurs in 56 different countries realize their dreams of owning their own businesses! There are so many reasons to love this program, but here a few that make it unique:

·      Empowers An Infinite Amount of Women All Over The World
There are millions of women who want to start businesses but don’t have the means to do so. By giving them loans, FITE enables these entrepreneurs to create successful businesses and often lift their entire family out of poverty. Plus, every time a loan is repaid it can be redistributed to someone else in need. That means that one $25 donation has the capacity to help millions of people!

·      FITE Makes Philanthropy a Personal and Inspiring Experience
Instead of simply writing a check, each donation is made to a specific person on the FITE website. The bios include the person’s name, nationality, and business so you know exactly where your money is going and can see how the person’s life was changed by YOUR donation!

·      Watch this Video: There’s so much to learn!
I watched this video and couldn’t believe how little I knew about the worldwide status of women.  So take a quick study break, embrace your girl power, and watch this enlightening clip!

Nikki Fig is a Broadcast Journalism major at Emerson College.
