Unemployment Rate Down for College Graduates

Time to breathe a collective sigh of relief, collegiettes—even with all those student loan payments, getting your college degree really is worth it in today’s economy.

According to an MSNBC report, the unemployment rate for college graduates fell in May from 4 percent to 3.9 percent, while the unemployment rate for people with just a high school degree increased from 7.9 percent to 8.1 percent. That means American college graduates are now more than twice as likely to find a job as Americans who only graduated from high school.

As of May, nearly 46.4 million college graduates are employed, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s 1.5 million more than last year.

Jack Downing, a managing partner with the job placement firm MRINetwork WorldBridge Partners, tells MSNBC that there has been high demand for college graduates in the last six months—some recent graduates are even getting multiple job offers.

“(Employers are) going to take somebody with a college education over somebody that’s not (got a degree),” Downing tells MSNBC. “It shows a commitment to themselves. It shows that they can learn, and most likely are going to be committed to career development.”

Now go update your resume and show those employers what you’ve got!
