Intern Diaries: Work Day Essentials

Hi Collegiettes!  I’m Jessica Hansen, a Journalism student at Iowa State University.  This summer I landed my dream internship at Meredith Corporation in Des Moines, Iowa.  I’m an editorial intern for special interest home design magazines.

I’m about half way through my 10-week internship and wanted to round-up some essential items you should keep handy around the cubicle:

1. Magazine Holders
At a magazine internship, magazines are everywhere.  I often have to look back through older issues so it’s necessary to keep them all orderly and close at hand.

2.  Planner
Sure, you can keep track of to-do’s on a computer or smart phone… but I like to jot the important stuff down in a planner I can carry around in my purse.

3.  Jewelry
It may be a good idea to keep a few versatile pieces of jewelry around your desk.  You never know when an important meeting or lunch comes up and your attire needs to be dressed up a little more.

4.  Cardigan
Offices can get chilly.  Since it’s summer, I don’t usually think to wear a cardigan to work.  But when I get there and get settled into the air conditioning, a cute cardigan is just what I need.

5.  Back-Up Flats
I love wearing heels, especially when I’m just sitting at my desk or walking down the hall.  But on photo shoot days or even to walk to a different building for lunch, I’m always regretting the pump decision.  So I keep a pair of nude flats at my desk for those occasions.  Nude is so hot right now and they go with practically any outfit.

6.  Notebook
Leave the spirals at school and opt for a lovely notebook to take to meetings.  A nice \hardcover, colored or patterned notebook feels so much more professional.

7.  File Folders
These are a big must for me!  I like to have lots of pretty-printed file folders around to keep my projects organized.  I always have several projects going on, so I like to label the tabs with the project title and its deadline.

8.  Sticky Notes
We all know that sticky notes are essential at the office–you need them for anything from jotting down notes during a phone call to marking a page in a magazine.  I’m a fan of floral ones as opposed to the standard pale yellow.

9.  Beauty Products
You don’t need a whole arsenal of beauty products at work, but there are a few things that you should keep stashed in your drawer.  Basic like antiperspirant, translucent powder and chap stick are good to have around.

Those are my top nine internship essentials!  Did I miss anything?  Is there anything you can’t possibly live without during your work week?
