The Ingredients In Kylie’s Lip Kits Are Suspiciously Similar to What’s in This $6 Lipstick

Those highly-coveted Lip Kits? Well, they might not be so hard to get your hands on after all. Oh, and you can get them for way, way cheaper, too.

Beauty blogger Stephanie Nicole did a little bit of investigative work and, in comparing the ingredients list for Kylie’s matte Lip Kits with those of ColourPop Cosmetics’ Ultra Matte Lipsticks, found that the formulations are nearly identical. Considering the fact that both cosmetics brands fall under the same parent company, the similarities are pretty suspicious.

For reference COLOR KEY: Yellow – Same ingredient, same order in formula. Blue – Same ingredient, different order in formula. Purple – Same pigments, different order (pigments are not required to be in order). Please note, this is the updated ColourPop formula. Not the first launch (any color outside their first launch is new formula) Not all ColourPop’s ultra mattes have been reformulated yet. According to them, they hope to do it in time. So don’t try & compare your first launch to the new Lip Kits…or the first launch lip kits. They are not the same. ADD: also, to be clear, the ingredients do need to be listed in order of highest concentration, to its least. The order does matter in a formula. Even if the ingredients are identical, if they are in a completely different order they won’t wear the same. The bulk of the formula, the first several ingredients, are the same, same order. What follows isn’t enough to significantly change the wear compared to the new ColourPop Ultra Mattes

As Nicole points out, the order of the first ingredients—which really makes a difference when it comes to beauty products—are the same. The subtle changes further down in the ingredients list aren’t as important; some, for example, can be attributed to the variations in color.

Of course, Kylie’s denied these accusations in the past, as ever since the release of her Lip Kits, makeup lovers have noted the similarities between the two products. In one of @kyliecosmetics‘s first Instagram posts, the youngest of the Kardashian-Jenners is seen posing with the ladies behind ColourPop.

Many users of both brands note that, in their opinion, Kylie’s matte lipsticks are much more hydrating than the ColourPop versions. But with the huge differences in cost (ColourPop’s lipsticks are just $6 and the Lip Kits will cost you $29), the ColourPop dupes make for a good alternative.

Of course, if you do choose to drop money on a Lip Kit, Nicole reminds us that it’s totally okay to decide where you want to spend your money! “If your ‘designer’ lipstick makes you happy, that’s completely cool,” Nicole wrote on Instagram. “You never need a reason to like anything.” Yas, girl.
