Beauty Secrets Behind the Most Iconic Old Hollywood Looks

We all have our favorite Old Hollywood beauty idols… Those outrageously long lashes! The perfectly pouty lips! Those pretty, shiny curls! Popular to contrary belief, these stars did not have it easy. They made sure to be perfectly prepped and primed for every occasion, and a couple did some peculiar things to achieve their signature look. Take note, though, there are some tips that you want to start trying!

Sophia Loren

Want to know how her skin looked luminous 24/7? This beauty’s secret is that she would take frequent hot baths with splashes of olive oil.

Rita Hayworth

Need to keep your hair looking very shiny, as if you’d just gotten it done professionally? To keep her signature red wavy mane look prim and proper, this star applied oil to her hair after washing it. She then wrapped in a towel for a couple of minutes before washing it out with hot water and lemon juice.

Gloria Grahame

To make her upper lip look more full, this actress would stuff cotton between her lip and teeth for a plumper look.

Vivien Leigh

This actress was self-conscious about her bottom lip, but she used less drastic measures than Vivien did. To give the illusion of a large pout, she used liner to draw outside her nature lip.

Bette Davis

Need to cover dark circles? This beauty has the answer: chilled cucumbers at night and a layer of petroleum jelly before bed.

Gloria Swanson

An apple a day might keep the doctor away, but according to this star, it was all about the vegetables. Not only would she eat them all the time, she would apply them directly to her face!

Marlene Dietrich

Want to talk about drastic? This beauty actually removed her molars to accentuate her cheekbones. Not only that, but she would also use surgical tape to give herself a temporary facelift.

Grace Kelly

On the topic of contouring, here’s a new way to do it. This blonde bombshell used blush on cheeks, and to shape her face, she used one shade lighter right underneath and one shade darker for the apples of her cheek.

Audrey Hepburn

Need longer and more defined lashes? After applying mascara, this star would use a pin to separate each individual lash.

Marilyn Monroe

Want to get the infamous Marilyn Monroe pout? You’ll need about 5 different shades of lipsticks and lipglosses. For her full lips, she would apply the darker colors on the corner, the lighter ones in the center, and finished it all off with a touch of lipgloss to give her lips a multi-dimensional look.

Which, if any, of these are a shocker? Which are you most likely to try?

When she's not running debt on clothes and makeup, you can usually find her out and about, exploring whatever town she is in or watching Netflix cuddled with a mug of hot chocolate. Currently, her favorite show is "Hawaii Five-O". She aspires to be the next Olivia Pope and Annalise Keating rolled into one, but with a stable marriage and children.
