8 Must-Have Beauty Products For Summer 2013

As you hit the beach or the internship for the summer season, you’ll need to rethink your beauty routine. Summer is the time for light, natural beauty, but that doesn’t mean we have to go totally bare. In the interest of preventing your mascara from running when you take a dive and your foundation from slipping down your face on your morning commute, Her Campus has put together a list of beauty-must haves for this summer.

Self-Tanner

Often, with summer sun comes brutal sunburn, but it’s time to eliminate risk for sun damage for good. Instead of worshipping the sun every day, try building a tan with a self-tanning product. There are tons of formulas to choose from to get your desired sun-kissed look. Neutrogena’s MicroMist Airbrush Sunless Tan will help you achieve that beach bum glow without actually being a beach bum and risking skin damage.

Sunscreen Stick

These little items are probably among the most important beach bag necessities. They’re easy to transport and ensure super quick application. Sunscreen sticks come in a variety of SPFs, but this one by Murad offers SPF 35. Don’t leave home without one of these babies this summer – especially because it makes reapplying a snap.

Light Makeup (with SPF!)

As much as you want a lightweight formula for the summer, you also need SPF! In exchange for your full-coverage foundation, try a lighter product that offers a sheerer finish and quicker application process. BB Creams are perfect for everyday wear and Clinique’s Age Defense BB Cream has an SPF of 20. It’ll take you to the office, to the beach and everywhere in between. Wherever you go, know you’re getting great coverage and much-needed sun protection.

Lip Balm (with SPF!)

Nothing’s worse than sunburned lips – that stiff, burning sensation that lingers after a long day in the sun is incredibly unpleasant and leads to dryness and cracking. When you’re in the sun, don’t forget to protect those kissers with a balm that has SPF in it. Kiehl’s Lip Balm comes in clear and tinted formulas, so you can punch up your pucker with a bit of color as you shield it from the sun.

Makeup Primer

While you’re running around the city taking care of intern duties, make sure your makeup doesn’t do the same. Keep it in place with a makeup primer – an extra layer of product that you apply before foundation. There’s no need to use a primer if you’re just using a BB Cream, but if you decide that a full-coverage foundation is the way you want to go for a certain event, a primer will help the heavier product stay put. This way, your makeup will be able to stand up against the oil and sweat that might come about with the summer heat.

Waterproof Mascara

The ultimate in beach beauty is a dependable waterproof mascara. Pool parties can be tricky if you’re planning on going swimming – the last thing you want is for your casual swipe of mascara to be running down your cheeks. Waterproof formulas really won’t budge, so don’t be afraid to take that plunge! Diorshow, a cult favorite, makes a waterproof version that’s perfect for a day at the beach or pool with friends.

Waterproof Eye Liner

Similar to the way mascara runs right down our cheeks when we dive into the ocean, eyeliner smears and gives us that raccoon look when we start to sweat. Swap your usual liner for one with a budge-proof formula. STILA’s Smudge Stick is precise, fade-proof and comes in a ton of different colors. By the end of the day, you’ll be satisfied to see that the original line you drew is still intact.

Bright Nails

Top off your beauty look with a bright manicure to welcome the summer sun. Nothing screams “fun” like a neon mani, and Essie’s new collection offers the punchiest hues we’ve ever seen. Layer an opaque white polish underneath these babies for maximum-neon effect. Even if rave-chic isn’t exactly your style, give it a try and adapt it to your own personal look.
