19 DIY Hair Accessories You Need in Your Arsenal

We can all agree that a hair accessory could make or break a hairstyle, but sometimes the best looking headbands, clips and bobby pins are the most expensive. However, with a little crafting, you can create your own for a much cheaper price! You’ll get a gorgeous piece to add to your #ootd and bragging rights!

1. Delicate pearl bow

This bow can be worn on its own or on a thin headband, and looks clean and elegant either way! The process is a lot more simple than it appears, and you’ll be sure to receive plenty of compliments on it. Shelterness can show you how to create your own with step-by-step images.

2. Knotted T-shirt headband

Sugar Bee Crafts walks you through making a simple knot with T-shirt yarn and creating a headband that goes with anything! This could be worn with a casual outfit or dressed up for date night. Make something that costs a pretty penny at the mall for a lot less.

3. Customized color bobby pins

Bobby pins always show when they’re in your hair, so you might as well embrace the fact and color coordinate with them! Thankfully, Club Chica Circle proves that coating the pins with your favorite shade of nail polish will do the trick. You can create alternating colors or a whole set of glittering gold pins to tame your mane.

4. Reinvented bobby pins

If you liked the previous accessory and want to take it a step further, Free People knows how! Use a whole set of pins together to create a pattern or image when lined up in your lucious locks, also using nail polish!

5. No-sew headband

If you’re new to crafting, this headband is a great DIY to start with! It only requires some simple knot tying, and So Here’s My Life explains it in detail with reference images. The end result is a playful headband, and you can customize it by using whatever colors and beads you want.

6. Hair cuff

This accessory can make a whole outfit look chic, but would you believe that it’s actually made from a plumbing ring? Any hardware store purchase can be transformed into an upscale ponytail holder with this Speculaas tutorial. You can even spray paint it to be any shade—metallic or matte—that you want!

7. Triangle headband

All you need to recreate this A Lemon Squeezy Home accessory is felt, glitter foam and elastic. We recommend switching it up and using your school colors!

8. Peacock bobby pins

Add a little something extra to an updo with these elegant pins. Thanks to Shannon Makes Stuff, you can learn how easy it is to strut your stuff and be confident like a peacock! (Apparently, all it takes is a few feathers from the craft store and a hot glue gun.)

If you couldn’t tell, scrunchies are making an inspirational comeback. Instead of buying a pack of neutral-colored scrunchies at the store, why not make it personal and use the fabric from your favorite old shirt or flannel pajama pants with this tutorial from Lily Allsorts?

10. Leather headband

Everyone loves a minimalist accessory, and when it’s as simple as Ruffles And Stuff’s tutorial, it’s even better! This headband will go with literally anything, and people will be asking you where you got it all day.

11. Rhinestone studded hair clip

Thanks to Consumer Crafts’ tutorial, you can take rhinestones and turn them into a surprisingly classy accessory. This DIY is a lot easier than it looks, luckily, and is a great gift!

12. Gold feather headband

This craft is fairly self explanitory, but the end result looks like a gift from Aphrodite herself. This tutorial is, instead, a gift from Top Inspired. They even provide detailed pictures of each step and videos for a more thorough explanation.

13. Hair comb

Top Inspired also shows you how to reinvent the hair comb with fabric scraps to create a flawless boho-chic look! This accessory is the perfect combination of messy and stylish (which we can all use, right?).

14. Leather hair tie

After wearing your hair in a ponytail so many times, you want to dress it up a bit while still effectively keeping hair out of your face. Cupcakes and Cashmere knows the struggle all too well and created a tutorial to show how you can use strips of leather, in whatever shade your heart desires, to add some flair to your hair.

15. Studded barrettes

Who knew metal studs could look so cute? Transient Expression spray paints these studs with bubbly colors like “Watermelon” and “Blue Ocean Breeze.” These clips are perfect for when you want to dress up a simple half-updo.
