Lauren Gardner '12: President of Alpha Phi Omega2/29/2012 |
Meet Lauren Gardner: avid Dav dirty chai drinker, SIS major, graphic design and communication minor, past orientation leader, Texas native (minus the twang!), one of the few people on the planet who can tie a cherry stem in a knot with her tongue, and, of course, this semester’s president of Alpha Phi Omega. When current senior Lauren Gardner stepped on campus in the fall of 2008, it was a given that she join Alpha Phi Omega, the co-ed community service fraternity on campus. Alpha Phi Omega is a brotherhood of like-minded individuals who have a passion for serving others and come together to foster friendships and mentor relationships within the chapter. Alpha Phi Omega gave her the opportunity to continue the service she started when she was younger. Lauren started serving others young when she volunteered weekly at a local food pantry throughout her elementary school years. Being heavily involved in her church youth group gave her the opportunities to participate in domestic and international mission trips, including her most memorable experience in Peru. In the summer after her sophomore year of high school, she traveled through her church group to Peru for ten days, where she helped rebuild a slum. During her travels, she has witnessed many levels of poverty in the U.S. as well as places in India and Africa. Visiting these places and experiencing these hardships, combined with her innate sense of service and helping others have driven her to studying international studies here at AU. |
The Collegiette’s™ Guide to the Spring DC Concert Scene1/25/2012 |
Nothing beats your favorite band singing your favorite song directly to you – and well, 500 other people. A concert is far more than trying to catch the attention of the lead singer, it’s the ability to hear and see the music with all the passion and emotion with which the artist(s) wrote it. We’ve all been to concerts and been disappointed by the realization of how much digital correction happens in the studio, or how much makeup the artists wear, but then there are some artists that sound exponentially better live, which makes all the other let-downs worth it. This spring, stop making excuses and change up your weekly schedule. Collegiette™ to collegiette™, here are some shows and venues in the district that won’t disappoint you. U Street’s 9:30 Club always has quite the line-up of popular bands and this spring is no different. It’s a great venue with reasonable prices and a more intimate feel than a bigger stadium or theater. You’ll want to check out their site to find the most up to date info and schedule, but here are some recommendations of bands that will put on a fantastic show at the 9:30! You can buy tickets from the club’s website (subject to a service fee) and directly at the club box office. |
Carmen Rios: Feminist. Activist. Student(ist).12/13/2011 |
You’ve definitely heard her name around campus or at least seen her and her hard-to-miss hairdo crossing the quad on a mission. Frankly, if you haven’t, you don’t even go here. Carmen Rios, current director of Women’s Initiative (WI) is a staple on American University’s campus. She’s got wild hair and a feisty attitude to match. When I met Carmen outside of the Dav on a gloomy Monday, she had a smile on her face and the love of her life in her arms, a sweet black Chihuahua mix named Eli. She was surrounded by friends and chatting up a storm, while we tried to snag a table. Carmen’s a social butterfly by nature. What may be a normal day for Carmen can be considered one of an average college student’s busiest days. She manages to balance a full course schedule, representing WI, and a part time job at a childcare center. After watching some wake-up TV and snuggling with Eli, Carmen scurries off to campus where spends most of her day in meetings or classes, but mostly meetings. She relies on a healthy caffeine intake and the little time she gets to relax with her friends during the day to get her through. Carmen’s evenings are usually occupied with homework or events with WI, but when she gets a free night, you can find her at happy hour. |
Do Your Service Day – Help Alpha Phi Omega Complete Over 1,200 Hours of Community Service in One Day!11/9/2011 |
It’s that time of year again, the leaves are changing, the days are getting colder and the nights are getting longer, but here’s something that’ll warm your heart more than a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks. The American University chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, your friendly neighborhood co-ed community service fraternity, is hosting their annual Do Your Service Day on November 12. Do Your Service Day, or DYSD (as the cool kids call it), is an annual event where students from AU and surrounding universities designate one day to improve our community and campus by completing over 1,200 hours of community service in just one day! All students are invited (and encouraged!) to participate. Click the link below to sign up—we will be working with great DC organizations like the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, We Are Family, and Artspace DC. This event works to unite students from all organizations and backgrounds with the common goal of improving our community. So join the brothers of Alpha Phi Omega on the 12th to make a difference in the District!

HCAU Musical Review: The Who's Tommy11/5/2011 |
While all of you were busy unpacking your rooms, saying goodbye to Mom and Dad, and saying hello to a new semester, the cast and crew of the fall musical were hard at work on The Who’s Tommy. All of their efforts came to fruition during the final two weekends in October. The show premiered on Thursday, October 20 followed by shows on October 21-22 and 27-29. If you didn’t get a chance to see it, you really missed out on finding your inner “Pinball Wizard.” Yes, to answer your question: The Who is the famous rock band, The Who. Don’t worry; I had no idea Pete Townshend had written a musical either. This production was not one of AU’s more family-friendly shows because of the mature themes and some rather graphic scenes of child abuse and murder, which I’m sure created some awkward moments for freshmen families with younger siblings who went to see the show during All-American Weekend. The rock opera follows Tommy (4-year-old and 10-year-old played by Brandon Deane and older Tommy played by Eddie Leavy), who, after witnessing his father murder his mother’s lover in their home at age four, becomes “deaf, dumb, and blind” and faces a life of sexual abuse from stereotypically pedophilic Uncle Ernie (Tim Harmey), cruelty from malicious Cousin Kevin (Matthew Rubbelke), and parents (Hilary Morrow and Brian Slayton) who try everything in their power to correct their mistakes. It is not until Tommy tries his hand at pinball that things begin to turn around for him. Tommy soon becomes a pinball superstar and manages to overcome the tragedies he’s experienced. |
