Lixxapalooza: Bringing Local Music to the Masses

5/2/2012
Every week Local Lixx brings local bands and artists to the KRFH airwaves. This Friday, the Lixx crew brings nine of them together for a night that you won’t want to miss.

The second annual Lixxapalooza, coordinated by Kobe Thompson and Jacob Stadtfeld, features the talents of Dolphin Star, Wild Lungs and Liquid Kactus. The bill also includes Triangle Eye, Mighty Redwood Ambassadors, OnHell, 2012, Family Thief and Giraffe.

For Stadtfeld, a sophomore at Humboldt State, comes from having so many talented local musicians in the same place.

Spread the Word to End the Word

5/2/2012
Young people around the world are taking a stand and raising awareness of the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the words “retard” or “retarded” and are helping encourage others to think before they speak.

The “R-word” or “retard(ed)” has found a place in common language and seems to be accepted by most, despite the fact that its use, casual or otherwise, is hurtful to millions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and those who love them — like me.

My oldest brother Sammy was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 4. I had trouble understanding his disability as a child, but as I grew older, I became more and more invested in protecting the welfare of people with IDD, especially my brother’s.

5/2/2012
You just aced your last final. You turned in that 12-page research paper. You sold your textbooks back to the bookstore. Let the summer begin! Are you going to pack your bags and head back to mom and dad’s ‘til August 20? No! You’re going to stay in Humboldt County and have the best summer of your life!

Humboldt summers are more than just bike rides through the marsh and attempting to get a tan at College Cove. Here’s just five of about a thousand great reasons to stick around the north coast this summer:

Spotted: Adorable Goats Across the Street from Wildberries!

4/27/2012

HC Humboldt Editor-in-Chief Zoe Berman caught these adorable goats across the street from Wildberries on April 26 in Arcata. The 5-week-old milk goats were for sale alongside flowers, garlic, and giant "galatic eggs" — which turned out to be goose eggs. The two young men selling these home grown goods sat next to their truck playing cribbage and enjoying the sunny springtime afternoon.

Best of the Fest: 'In Our Hands' Takes Home Top Honors in the Humboldt Film Festival

The Fresh Prince of... Humboldt?

4/24/2012

Humboldt County is getting a taste of Hollywood while Will Smith and M. Night Shyamalan film scenes for the upcoming film ‘After Earth’ in Humboldt Redwoods State Park.

Filming started April 23 and is expected to wrap up on May 5. Parts of Humboldt Redwoods State Park will be closed, but Eel River Sector Supervising Ranger John O'Rourke said the rest of the park will be open to the public.

According to various news reports, “After Earth” casts Will Smith and his 13-year-old son, Jaden, as an estranged father and son whose spaceship crash-lands on Earth 1,000 years after it has become uninhabitable. Jaden Smith's character then reportedly has to traverse the post-apocalyptic planet in order to save his father.

Armenian Genocide Documentary

4/17/2012

"Like the genocide of the Armenians before it, and the genocide of the Cambodians which followed it,… the lessons of the Holocaust must never be forgotten." — Ronald Reagan April 22, 1981

To commemorate the 97th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and the turkish government's persistant denial of it's responsibility and attempts to destroy an entire race in what is known as the first genocide of the 20th century, the Armenian Students Association of Humboldt State University presents "The Armenian Genocide" a documentary that traces back the history of the genocide and evaluates why the turkish government continually refuses to acknowledge what happened on Ottoman soil and why the United States government is afraid to acknowledge the crimes against humanity.

Some sociology classes are allowing this to be an extra-credit event so get there early or on time. Last year we were at capacity and people were sitting in the aisles.

Narrated by Julianna Margulies with additional narrations by Ed Harris, Natalie Portman, Laura Linney, Orlando Bloom and others

Evita the Musical

4/17/2012

Eva Perón used her smarts and charisma to rise meteorically from the slums of Argentina to the presidential mansion as First Lady. Adored by her people as a champion for the poor, she became one of the most powerful women in the world  while her greed, outsized ambition and fragile health made her one of the most tragic. EVITA tells Eva's passionate and unforgettable true story, and features some of theater's most beautiful songs, including "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" and "High Flying, Adored."

Don't miss EVITA, starring Humboldt State's own Elena Tessler, at Ferndale Repertory Theatre! Friday and Saturday night performances begin at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Student tickets costs $16.

You can get your tickets online or by calling 1-800-838-3006.

The theatre is 40 minutes south of HSU, so grab a few friends and carpool down to Ferndale!

Don't Forget to Vote!

4/17/2012

Don't miss your chance to vote in this year's Associated Students elections. Voting takes place online April 17, 18 and 19. Go to the A.S. webpage for more information and to check out the Voter's Guide.

Many candidates this semester are running uncontested, including Ellyn Henderson who is up for A.S. President. In her Candidate Statement, Henderson wrote "Every day I’m surrounded by beautiful people and a breathtaking environment; It’s honestly hard not to smile." Henderson served on the A.S. council this school year, as the College of Natural Resources representative.

Evan Petillo, on the otherhand, has some competition for the position of College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences representative. There are three positions available, but four students are vying for the spots.

"This upcoming year there are some very important issues that need to be taken care and when I became aware of these issues, I knew automatically that I would want to take part in the important decision making here at Humboldt State University," said Petillo in his Candidate Statement.

The college representative positions will not be filled for the College of Natural Resources or the College of Professional Studies.
