What to Wear: Graduation Edition

5/10/2013

When I graduated from high school, I sat on the stage, gave a speech, and shook my mayor’s hand all while wearing a jersey-knit, black, cap-sleeve dress (à la swimsuit cover-up) and a black pair of Penny Kenny flats that I had acquired two weeks prior at a consignment shop. To say that I was dressed to the nines would be a gross exaggeration or a flawless execution of sarcasm at its finest.  I’d like to think my sense of fashion has evolved since then to the point where I recognize that I have my own style. There are pieces I can pick up in the clothing store and say, “that’s cute”, but I would never purchase any of them because I know I wouldn’t wear them.  I’m currently awaiting the arrival of my graduation dress, which I purchased online. Bold decision, I know.  My mother had been hounding me for weeks to purchase a dress, so naturally I freaked out and thought about my way-too-basic ensemble from high school. This got me thinking, what should people wear for graduation? If you went to an all-girls, private school you probably wore white to celebrate your transition to college. If you went to a public school, like me, you probably wore something that kept you cool under your robes. Both are great ideas, but are they applicable today, as we prepare for graduation from college?  I’ve come up with a few tips to guide you as you figure out what to wear come Graduation Weekend.

Navigating the Friend Zone and Other Unfortunate Situations

4/1/2013

"Let’s have a moment of silence for our comrades in the Friend Zone.”

I am a serial friend zoner; at least that’s what my friends say. I meet a guy, think he’s great, and do something über friendly like give him a high-five or call him “kiddo.”  I don’t see anything wrong with high-fiving people and I’m fairly certain I’ve called everyone in my life “kiddo” at one point, sorry about that mom. I suppose I’m not a fan of my identifier because I’m not quite certain I know what the Friend Zone is or if it really exists. I set out to understand the Friend Zone and talked to men and women, alike. Here’s what they had to say:

“The Friend Zone is like being in the Night’s Watch [Game of Thrones reference for 10 points]. You think you’re a badass because you’re going to a specific place only to realize you’re stuck in hell.”  – Male

“To care for someone without romantic feelings.” – Female

“The Friend Zone is when you want to move forward in a relationship with someone, but they don’t want to, yet they still want you in their life. You can intentionally put someone in the Friend Zone or you can do it subconsciously. I’ve definitely been in the Friend Zone and I’ve put people in it, as well” – Male

“No romantic and no sexual relationship.” – Female

“Where a lot of people don’t think they’re going, but where they end up. Everyone’s had a run with the Friend Zone.” – Male

“Where dreams go to die.” - Female

15 Ways You Know You’re A Senior

3/28/2013

1. The idea of going to a register or mixer disgusts you. 12 A.M. means bar time.

2. The “G” word gives you hives. And panic attacks. And upset stomach. And sweaty hands. And chicken pox.

3. The question you dread the most is “What are you doing next year?” Just don’t ask it.

4. You couldn’t care less about class, homework, or anything remotely academic. What’s the point anyway?

5. You congratulate your friends outwardly for their new jobs, but inwardly you’re bitter and hating them just a little bit...okay, actually, a lot.

6. Every time you do anything remotely Bucknell you find yourself saying “this is the last time I’ll...”

This Week in the News

3/20/2013

Let’s pop the Bucknell Bubble and take a look at what’s going on in other news.

Palestinian Buses in Israel. While this has been in the news for a while, the buzz has picked up again, as one of the buses was recently set on fire. If you need a refresher, earlier on this month, the Israeli government started operating a Palestinian-only bus service to transport workers to and from the West Bank into Israel.  Why is this so controversial? Um, it’s only a civil rights/segregation issue between the two nation-states with one of the oldest conflicts in the contemporary Middle East. Check out what the Guardian has to say about it, here.

To Do or Not to Do?, Should Never Be the Question…

All you need to navigate House Party, the right way.

It’s here. The most anticipated weekend of the semester is finally here! No, silly, Pat Benatar at Chrysalis is the second most anticipated weekend this semester. I’m talking about House Party! House Party Weekend is what every college movie tries to replicate, what other schools can’t duplicate (Frolics at Davidson, anyone?), and what most of us will vaguely remember, yet hold in high esteem come Monday morning. As Barney Stinson would simply put it, it’s legen - wait for it - dary. First years, if you don’t believe me, just ask some of your upperclassmen friends. For those of you upperclassmen who haven’t quite caught the HPW bug, maybe you’ve been doing it wrong. Fear not, here are some dos and don’ts for the weekend that are sure to make sure you maximize your fun.

House Party Weekend: A Letter from Seniors to Freshmen

3/18/2013

It’s that time of year, the one you’ve been hearing all about since orientation. You may not be sure what to expect – when we were in your shoes, we didn’t either. In the hope that you’ll have a House Party experience that totally rocks your world, our senior staff writers would like to share some thoughts and tips with all of our lovely freshmen readers.

It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint

First things first: pace yourself. We’ve all heard the adage: it’s a marathon, not a sprint – it couldn’t be more true. Making a conscious effort to pace yourself will make your weekend all the more enjoyable. Yes, taking shots before your 8 a.m. on Friday might sound awesome now, but you’ll probably regret it. It is a long weekend of festivities. If you want to get the most out of your first HPW, you need to slow it down, drink a lot of water, and eat as much as possible throughout the days. Speaking of food, make sure you capitalize on all the free food offered to you throughout the weekend. Usually, the deans and various professors hand out hot dogs and hamburgers from a food cart, which is pretty entertaining. Not all professors are pro-HPW… in fact, many of them are very against it, so try not to talk about it or blatantly blow off class this week in honor of the weekend’s activities. Most of them don’t care, and if your professor happens to notice that you’re drunk in class, bad things will happen. Be subtle.

Go Outside Your Comfort Zone

Campus Celebrity: Daniela Calcagni

2/25/2013

Freshman Hall: Malcolm 3 (Swartz)

Favorite Song of the Moment: Yellow by Coldplay / the finale song of Pitch Perfect

Favorite Place to Shop: Forever 21

Daniela Calcagni is saving the world, one benevolent gesture at a time. This senior from Manhasset, New York is a Spanish and History double major with big plans for the future. Even though she’s busy studying for the MCAT and stressing about being a second semester senior, she still finds time to give back to those less fortunate.

You may have heard about B.A.C.E.S (Bucknell Advancing Communities by Educating and Serving), which is a chapter of the national organization, A.C.E.S. Every year during Spring Break, the group travels to the Dominican Republic to pass out clothes, toys, books, and medical supplies at a school set up by past Bucknellians; to feed over 200 families; to set up medical outreach; and for the first time this year, to assist in the development of a community garden. You can check out B.A.C.E.S. here.

New Year, New Trends

1/6/2013

What a whirlwind year 2012 was!!  Full of ups and downs and all sorts of surprises, last year certainly kept us on our toes! Here’s an awesome video recap, if you’re already feeling nostalgic: 2012 Recap. There were binders full of women, the last Twinkie was manufactured, President Obama was re-elected, Gabby Douglass became a household name, and the entire world was introduced to Clint Eastwood’s infatuation with empty chairs. Last year also saw the end of Michael Phelps’ pro career; the death of Whitney Houston, the devastation caused by Super storm Sandy, and too many lives lost due to shooting sprees. While we could never forget what 2012 encompassed, it’s time to look forward to what 2013 will bring. Trends come and go, that’s why they’re trends; so with that being said it’s time to say au revoir to some that have overstayed their welcome and time to make room for some fresh, new, exciting ones. Here’s to sticking it to the Mayans and making it to a New Year!

What to Watch: Holiday Film Edition

12/17/2012

“Sure, you may have seen these already, but there’s a reason you liked them in the first place, right?”

What beats curling up on the couch with someone you love, sipping on delicious hot chocolate topped with a little too much whipped cream while watching a holiday film? Can’t think of an answer? Neither can I. Once Thanksgiving is over, everyone seems to be filled with holiday spirit and can’t help but be merry. Sure, it’s finals week, but instead of being a Scrooge, I have switched my study music to include the N’Sync and Justin Bieber Christmas albums and I am choosing to look forward to the Grey’s Anatomy holiday special that’s bound to air within the next few weeks. You know the time has come for holiday films when ABC Family releases its “25 Days of Christmas” line-up, which they did on Saturday, December 1st.  Feel free to check out the full list here: ABC Family 25 Days of Christmas.

If you’re a seasoned veteran of holiday films, you know that there are just some movies you never grow tired of watching. These are the films that are littered with witty one-liners, lovely heartfelt messages, and killer soundtracks. For whatever reason, we return to them time and time again with just as much fervor and appreciation as the first five times we saw them. Here are a few of my and my friends’ favorite holiday films.  Some are classics and some just deserve a league of their own.

Where to Meet Guys On Campus

10/3/2012

Perhaps it’s the crisp weather, the comfy sweaters, or the advertised hayrides that make us here at Her Campus crave some cuddling on a Sunday afternoon. Or maybe we still can’t get over Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds’ secret marriage. Whatever the reason, cuddling has become something we can’t seem to get enough of. The pervasive presence of the campus “hook-up culture” leaves much to be desired in terms of romance. If you haven’t yet caved and joined college dating sites like Ivy Date, we’re here to offer an alternative! Here are a few places to meet guys on campus other than at a party.

Athletic Events
I found myself surrounded by males at the last Men’s Soccer home game. I may have been one of twelve girls in the bleachers. Ladies, take advantage of sporting events to get your flirt on! Find a sport that you’re interested in and go to a game, you’ll be surprised at how friendly guys can be while cheering on a team. If you’re knowledgeable about the sport, even better! What better way to start up a conversation with the cute guy sitting next you than by telling him you think the referee is an idiot for making such awful calls? So don those Bucknell Athletics shirts, girls, and get to cheering!
