Last Quarter Blues (and Yellow)5/11/2013 |
Midterms are winding down and talk of finals has begun. Yes, it’s that time of the quarter again, only this time instead of making plans for next quarter that’s right around the corner we’re making plans for the seemingly endless summer that lies ahead. As this quarter decelerates to an end, I will be looking back more and more on the amazing year that I have had in California. The year seems to have gone by at light speed and I am so sad when I consider the prospect of leaving UCLA and the Bruin family I have been building since Fall. Nonetheless, I am sure I will be all smiles as I reflect on the memories and experiences from my time at UCLA. Favorite memory- There are too many to chose from! Hiking up to the Hollywood sign over Spring Break (see picture above!), being in Los Angeles during award season earlier this year and spotting random celebrities around town are definitely high on the list. Ultimately, the friends I have made, the parties we’ve been to, the fascinating classes I have taken and my exploration of Los Angeles all combine to make one, huge, fantastic and indescribable memory. And of course, writing and reading the articles for the UCLA chapter of HerCampus! It has been a great way to get to know about what is happening on campus and reflect on my own experiences here. Plus I am hoping to do some travelling when school finishes so hopefully I will have even more experiences to draw from! |

The Electric Run4/27/2013 |
The Electric Run Were you excited by the Color Run this year? Then you will be nothing short of dazzled by the Electric Run, coming to Los Angeles May 24th. The Electric Run is a 5km walk or run which combines distance running with an enthralling light show, orchestrated by the talented artists and lighting technicians who have designed shows for Coachella, Dreamworks Animations, Disney and some of Vegas’ most stunning productions. It is as much a show as it is a run, and every course has a distinct lighting experience with an alternative lighting design and mood—some are energetic, others more atmospheric and otherworldly. On top of this, the in-house DJs collaborate with the Art and Lighting Directors to create a unique soundtrack which adapts to the visual atmosphere of each course. The Electric Run is taking place all over the country, and next month the tour reaches LA! Here are just some of the experiences that the organizers have created at other events: Glowing neon trees which change color to match the music Tunnels with dancing patterns and figures on the walls, ceilings, and floors Lakes and rivers glowing in other-worldly hues Tunnels of light created by a rainbow of lasers Glowing arches and columns Neon saguaro cactus Red rock cliffs glowing in psychedelic colors and patterns Colored fountains dancing to the beat Entire buildings lit so brightly that they can be seen from spaceAs if all of that is not enough, you will be greeted with a thrilling finish celebration at the end of your run! The music and lights are amplified as you cross the finish line and you are welcome to stay and dance as long as you would like to the latest EDM tunes mixed by the in-house DJs. We Angelinos are lucky because Charissa Saverio, a.k.a. DJ RAP, the number one female DJ in the world will be performing at the finish-line celebration! |

Career Week 20134/6/2013 |
At UCLA we are fortunate to have a fantastic Career Center which works all year round to help Bruins discover their potential career paths. Next week is the highlight of the Careers Center’s calendar as Career Week kicks off, April 8-12. This is the week in which the Career Center invites students to engage with speakers from a wide variety of fields: from chemical engineering to the entertainment industry, from accounting to health careers in government and military, Careers Week brings us representatives from every hopeful career you can hope for or imagine. Whether you are an undeclared major or absolutely positive of the career path you want to take after graduation, Career Week has something important for you to hear. Here are just some things that the folks at the Career Center promise that we will gain from the Week: Insider tips on how to launch your career, and how to succeed once you’ve started Valuable and effective job search strategies Exposure to current trends in your chosen field The chance to network with people who have similar interestsAs well as the opportunity to learn about a career that you are considering going in to, there are opportunities to improve your networking skills and figure out how to evaluate job offers you will receive in the future. International students also have the option of attending a workshop focused on gaining work in the United States, and for students pursuing a Liberal Arts degree there is even a program which will highlight all of the different careers options that are open to you. |

Campus Celebrity: MJ Jackson3/9/2013 |
Campus Celebrity: MJ Jackson Major: Communications Year: Junior, transfer Hometown: Temecula, CA A supporter of campus organization, SANNA, and hoping to be part of its staff next year, MJ is a hard working Communications major involved in some of the most important causes on the UCLA campus. This only her first year at UCLA and she has made the most of her time, gaining as much experience of Bruin life as possible. This week’s campus celebrity is currently putting her comm major to use in the planning of the upcoming Black Bruin Transfer Day, which is set to happen next quarter on May 10th. What is Black Bruin Transfer Day? An event that we’re still planning at the moment for African American students that transfer in to UCLA, to teach them about the resources and groups available to them on campus. It will be on May 10th and I’m helping with the social media for the event. We’re currently working on getting funding and preliminary plans organized, like food, for the event so we’re still in the early stages! What is SANNA? SANNA stands for Social Awareness Network for Activism through Arts. It is a really cool campus organization that promotes awareness of activist causes through different events and programs. For example they helped organize and promote “The Vagina Monologues” which was performed last month. What encouraged you to be a part of SANNA? |
Television 2013: What Will be Missed and What to Look Forward to3/2/2013 |
The CW cancels “90210” Having watched “90210” since season one I was so disappointed to hear on Friday that the CW’s spin-off of the ‘90s classic, "Beverly Hills, 90210," will end its five year run this May. The series finale (which will feature a guest appearance from Michael Jackson’s son, Prince) will air May 13th, ending season five and concluding the SoCal-based drama. Viewer ratings have steadily decreased since the show’s inception in 2008: according to The Hollywood Reporter, the February 18th episode dropped to an all time low for the series with only 550,000 viewers tuning in. The CW network’s president, Mark Pedowitz, has released a statement: "The CW has had five great seasons with America’s favorite zip code, 90210. “I’d like to thank the talented cast, producers, and crew for all their hard work and dedication to the series. We are very proud of the West Beverly High alumni.” The cancellation of “90210”marks just one of the once-popular television shows which will be ending their run this year. Here is a look at the shows we have loved and will miss. “30 Rock” (2006-2013) The iconic NBC comedy is ending this year after seven seasons, having gained Tina Fey critical acclaim as an on-screen comedienne and placed Alec Baldwin among the names of televisions legends of comedy. 'The Office' (2005-2013) Also leaving NBC is “The Office,” having lost its star, Steve Carell, two years ago as well as popular co-stars, B.J. Novak and Mindy Kaling more recently. The mockumentary-style classic will be missed dearly from our screens but keep your fingers crossed, Office fans, talks are in the works for a potential spin-off show starring audience favorite, Dwight (played by Rainn Wilson). 'Gossip Girl' (2007-2013) |
Lessons From Across the Pond: Winter Quarter2/18/2013 |
Last quarter, I shared with HerCampus some of the things that I had discovered in California since my arrival in September (www.hercampus.com/school/ucla/lessons-across-pond ...Click this link for the article). Four months on, it is about time to track my progress as a Bruin. I have settled in to my California environment and have had some memorable experiences. Having found a way to balance my time between studying for classes and exploring Los Angeles, my perspective about the West coast has deepened since September. Here are five more things about Cali-culture for all potential or hopeful visitors to UCLA from the other side of the Atlantic. Firstly, visitors should note the idiosyncratic American holiday calendar and look forward to American-specific public holidays such as Presidents’ Day and Martin Luther King Jr Day. These are great ways to commemorate and learn about the history of the United States and also provide a day off from work or school. Also, although not an official public holiday, Valentine’s Day is a very big deal here. If I had woken up on February 14th and not remembered that it was Valentine’s Day, I would have been quickly reminded by the bouquets of roses and pink decorations all across campus on my way to class! Conversely, one of my favorite days of the year, Pancake Day, is not commemorated here! Also known as “fat Tuesday,” this day marks the day before the start of Lent in the Catholic calendar and is a great excuse for everyone to fill up on crepes and get creative with sweet or savory toppings. |
